Astrology is a beautiful, rich language which was first interpreted and spoken by the Ancient Babylonians as early as 5,000 BC. They believed that the movements of the planets were the gods writing messages to mortals in the sky; that these messages, if they decoded them, would open up a dialogue with fate. They began to chart the movements of the planets and stars.

This dialogue continues for us living in the modern day as the universe remains in constant motion and we catch its whisper as it moves. I would say that astrology is actually the mother tongue of life containing as it does all the insights, symbols and images that reflect life itself. Like any language or body of knowledge it has evolved over time to reflect the changes in society and its idioms.

The renowned 17 th century astrologer William Lilly wrote: I believe God rules by all his divine providence and that the stars by his permission are instruments. Today, however, I would describe astrology as being a unique psychological and spiritual tool for uncovering who you are and what gives you meaning in life.

In my own experience, since becoming an astrologer in the mid 1980s, I have found that clients are looking for insights into how to understand themselves and their destiny. How to align with their purpose in this world as well as connect with the right people in love and friendship.

When situations involving love, purpose, wellness or business arise, they can be catalysts that trigger the need for insight into what is going on and why it might be. So my work involves helping mend a broken heart, making a business decision, navigating a dark night of the soul or a transformation that necessitates a change of career. There are many reasons people will consult me but it all boils down to the fundamental search for a sense of meaning, inner peace and insight.

In terms of language and the idea that messages are written in the stars, classical astrology might describe experiences in absolute black-and-white terms, judging certain planetary movements to be either benefic (good) or malefic (bad). Today, we take a more psychological and spiritual approach: I will talk a client through their celestial DNA and their star power so that they can find the meaning in an experience and discover a realm of possible outcomes that transcend labelling as good or bad. As we know, often what seems like a stroke of luck turns out to contain hidden difficulties, and what we initially see as a crisis is laden with opportunities to develop our resilience, power and self-worth.

I hope this book will open up a gateway to the language of the stars so you can enjoy it, speak it, take comfort and guidance from it, and ultimately live it.

The earliest astronomers took note of cycles and recognised that the movement of the planets correlated to events here on Earth. Knowing when the river Nile would flood according to celestial phenomena was vital for crop plantation. The pyramids and underground temples built by ancient civilisations in Egypt and China were specifically aligned with the stars in order to receive their energy. Events on Earth were seen as a direct mirror of celestial events.

The 1 st -century Greek philosopher Plato formed this theory of as above, so below in his book Timaeus , which considered the universe to be a great living body. He believed the cosmos had the answers to life. His thinking became the basis for hermetic philosophy, a blend of science, alchemy and astrology, and the basis for the development of Western medicine up until after the Renaissance.
