Foreword

Having worked on the TYPO3 Association Board for most of the past decade, Ive seen the project evolve. When I started in TYPO3, the only way to learn something was by asking questions; even documentation was rare. It was like talking around a campfire in those early days. Today, TYPO3 is still an open, lively conversation where everybody can contribute. Its the differences that have made the voices harmonious; everyone is eager to share their experience. This book is a part of that heritage.

This book captures the warm, welcoming spirit of TYPO3. Its proof of what a great community has gathered around TYPO3 and what we have achieved. The authors, Felicity Brand, Heather McNamee, and Jeffrey A. McGuire of Open Strategy Partners GmbH, have distilled knowledge from the many community members who shared their expertiseand this book wouldnt exist without the community. I heartily thank the many contributors who collaborated on the book.

The TYPO3 Association had a strategic vision to create a different kind of book than weve had for TYPO3 before. We hope it is a catalyst for the reader, an open door into our project. We intend to continue maintaining and updating it over time to keep that door open and the welcome mat out for newcomers.

The decision to work with Apress was part of this strategic vision to extend the projects reach. The chance to work with a renowned publisher can help us bring our favorite open source software to new audiences. Were hoping to see this book translated into other languagesFrench, Spanish, Chinese, Arabic, and moreso that TYPO3 can continue helping people everywhere and from all backgrounds solve their web publishing needs.

Weve long called TYPO3 the enterprise CMS. Our promise to users is that this is a serious, reliable product, supported by a vibrant professional ecosystem. TYPO3 offers some strongly opinionated ways of putting together a CMS to quickly, economically, and repeatably deliver great client projectsthe hierarchical page tree, semantic content elements, robust built-in multisite, and multilingual features, to mention a few. We have a strong focus on backend editor usability, too. TYPO3 is packed with features out of the box compared to many alternatives. Some of TYPO3s feature-USPs include publishing scheduling, image cropping, and form creation without needing additional software or licenses. Simultaneously, TYPO3 offers you the full freedom to expand and extend it to build exactly what you need, based on industry-standard, open source components.

Those are all great technical USPs, but TYPO3s strongest feature is the people in and around it. Few products today, especially in software, can survive without community. Our community leads us, and we go where the users need us to go. And now, dear reader, youre welcome to join us as part of our evolution.

Olivier Dobberkau

President of the Board, TYPO3 Association

As the digitalization of the world continues and accelerates, reliable, powerful, flexible communication and publishing tools are more important than ever. TYPO3 is made for exactly this. It is an enterprise content management system (CMS) and a powerful communications tool with robust multisite and multilingual support. This book is here to show you the way into this open source CMS and show you some of its potential.
