I developed an interest in sign language when, decades ago, my grandmama first read Kokos Kitten to me. It was a story about a gorilla that learned sign language to communicate with humans. Such communication turned into an unspoken bond between Koko and his series of cat friends. The combination of my obsession with gorillas and the power of this unique language to connect living beings was irresistible to me. I was quite reserved and shy; I rarely spoke, and when I did, I mumbled due to extreme discomfort and anxiety.
My mother, an insightful person, fueled my passion with dictionaries, books, and learning opportunities. My initial reasons for learning quickly turned into passion for the language and a deep desire to communicate within the Deaf community.
My path to where I am today has been full of adventure and sprinkled with ups and downs. I began interpreting at the age of 17a terrifying learn-as-you-go situation that I credit for a significant portion of my growth. During and after college, I tutored, volunteered, and continued to interpret for classes and extracurricular functions. Altogether, Ive interpreted for over 15 years, mainly in the higher education system. When I had my own children, I began teaching individuals and families, and seven years ago, I moved teaching to my website to help more people looking for affordable ASL instruction.
My time learning ASL was not all easy and enjoyable, and there were times when I wanted to give up. I was sometimes frustrated with the lack of resources, clear instruction, and intuitive steps to reach fluency. If youve found yourself frustrated or not sure where to start, I can relate. I suspect that your ASL learning journey will be like mine in some ways but ultimately your own.
You may be losing your hearing and need to learn ASL because your ability to communicate with your family and friends is deteriorating. You need help, you need to learn it right away, and the process needs to be easy. You need a way to encourage your family and friends to learn it with you without them being overwhelmed.
My mission in the ASL world is to make learning sign language straightforward, simple, and fun. Im tired of seeing so many ASL learners like yourself scramble to find a reliable resource to get you from not knowing any ASL to meaningfully signing with others. (And fast!) This workbook is also an easy way to get your family on board and learning ASL alongside you. As you begin your journey, know that with each lesson you are one step closer to ASL communication. ASL is a visual language based on specific hand gestures and their placement relative to the body along with head and body movements, mouth morphemes (the specific movements you make with your mouth to add meaning to a sign), facial expressions, and other non-manual markers. You express ASL with your hands, body, and face. You receive it with your eyes.
The grammar for sign language is structured quite differently from English grammar. It is a robust, expressive, and evolving language with as much information expressed as any oral language.
