INTRODUCTION

If you found yourself lost in the woods, would you be able to survive the night? Would you be able to survive a week? How long do you think you could make it if you were on your own and you had only scant supplies?

As more and more people venture out into the wilds, the value of outdoor survival knowledge becomes more and more important, but rarely do we have the opportunity to seriously hone our skills. For people in the city, far removed from any patch of trees, the very notion of survival may sound far-fetched and nerve-wracking. But what if I told you this book could prepare you for the great outdoors in simple, progressive lessons that will leave you with bona fide experience and confidence?

This book is designed to give you wilderness survival skills from the comfort of your home. However, when anyone picks up a book to learn about the outdoors, they must first be aware of the irony in there. How can one learn to survive by reading a book? Well the glory of this bite-sized book is that it will fit in your pack and it will get you moving through survival exercises step by step. Learn through practicing the skills that will keep you warm, dry and safe in even the most extreme conditions. The map is not the same as the actual land, yet you have to start somewhere and this book is the perfect starting point.

I started learning about the outdoors when I was just a minnow, camping and fishing in the Bayou and along the Mississippi. Ive spent cold nights hunting in Montana and Wyoming, and rainy nights and hot humid summers throughout Louisiana. Ive always enjoyed the simplicity of life outdoors and I want to share that joy along with some of the wisdom Ive accumulated over my six decades. Survival should not have to mean suffering, but it will unless you take the time to prepare yourself against the elements.

When youre far away from your creature comforts you have to master the bare necessities and, surprise, you learn pretty quickly what you can live without. So I implore you to follow my directions. Go to the wilderness when your life does not depend on it, in order to get comfortable with only minimum tools and your wits. If you want to get the most out of what you read here, you will go out into your backyard and practice slowly before moving into more remote circumstances. Dont take this book for face value either, find out for yourself whether or not my advice works. Prepare yourself through getting comfortable with the uncomfortable and learn for yourself what you are truly capable of.

NOTE* this book does not detail any wilderness first aid. Please seek proper instruction on providing assistance in the woods.

Pop Quiz:

1. The rule of _____ stands for how long a person can survive without the essentials of life.

You can last __ weeks without food

__ days without water

__ minutes without oxygen to the brain.

2. True or false, It is more important to keep moving when youre lost, so that you can find your way back while your memory is fresh, and you can get where you need to be before your energy runs out.

Picture 3Picture 4 T F

3. If you are going to spend the night in the forest, youll need to have:

a) a tent, a sleeping pad and a sleeping bag.

b) a sleeping bag and a hammock.

c) an emergency blanket and warm clothes.

d) a sheltered area and a fire.

4. The first order of business in the forest is to:

a) find food.

b) find water.

c) find shelter.

d) find a way out.

Answers: 1. The rule of 3 is a great reminder of how important water is and how resilient our bodies can be even without food. A human can go three weeks without eating but only three days without water. Well discuss these items further on. In a survival situation, a person who has stopped breathing needs immediate attention. Basic CPR can keep oxygenated blood circulating to the body and the brain until they can receive medical attention.

2. FALSE. To be lost means to have long ago moved past the hmm I might be lost stage straight on through to the Where the hell am I? stage. Face it. Its unlikely that youll miraculously remember where you came from if you have no frame of reference. Before any trip, leave your itinerary with a responsible friend or relative. They should know: who youre with, where you are, and how long you plan to be out there. When you know someone will be looking for you (i.e. anytime you are lost during normal circumstances), you need to STAY WHERE YOU ARE so that rescuers do not miss you as they sweep the area. If there is no chance anyone is coming to rescue you (i.e. the world you know has collapsed and no semblance of search and rescue remains), then it is in your best interest to move back slowly and carefully, making camp where you find a clean water source and good shelter, and maintaining a constant direction to avoid moving in circles.

3. There is no right answer here, only options based on your level of comfort, experience, and preparedness. If all you had was an emergency blanket, then you could spend an autumn night outdoors and be fine, but of course my wish for you is that you learn how to pack the necessities of life in a manageable way so that you can be more or less comfortable out there.

4. Answer: Variable. As mentioned, humans can go three weeks without food and if you are only lost or spending a couple of days in the woods, you will most likely die of food poisoning rather than starvation. Unless you know without a shadow of a doubt what foods are available to you and how to properly prepare them, your focus needs to be on keeping warm and hydrated.
