"John Carlton is that cool, street-wise, curmudgeonly, heart-of-gold uncle that you always wished you had... the one who played guitar in a rock-and-roll band, and who just happens to be an incredible wizard of sales copy and marketing. When you read what John writes you will be wildly entertained, and you'll also become a much better entrepreneur."

You should all know of John Carlton. Hes a long-tenured major leaguer. Now a graybeard. It seems to me all the real rebels are aging. Most of todays direct response copy that I see churned out is derivative and formulaic and safe. Not Carltons. Anyway, he has now written a book (The Entrepreneurs Guide To Getting Your Shit Together). Its good . It is a poke in the eye, a whack on the head, a blunt dissertation.
One thing we completely agree on is that most do NOT have their shit together. Not even close. And, to the salesmen go the spoils.

I first met John Carlton at one of Gary Halberts classic seminars. I soon hired him to bust my chops and coach me to master copywriting. A lot of folks talk about getting serious corrective advice and correction. But few people truly desire it or act on it -- let alone come back for more punishment .
But once I had a John Carlton alter-ego installed in my head, I possessed a guiding voice for writing persuasive, punchy copy. Youre putting me to sleep here. Stop selling from your heels and swing for the customers passionate sweet spot. Geez Perry, you need to take your inner salesman out for a walk every once in awhile. I now instantly knew whether what I d just written was going to make the cut or not.
It suddenly became easier to write winning promotions . John is difficult to hire, because frankly he does n t need the dinero. So if you want the voice of John Carlton installed in your head, I recommend you pick up this book ( The Entrepreneu r s Guide To Getting Your Shit Togethe r ). In case the title didnt alert you, its edgy.
Everything John does is edgy. There just arent many people who can alert you to the mind-bending irrationality of real human beings - and show you how to work with it, flow with it. If humans confuse you and you need a teacher, Johns your man.

Occasionally you get to meet gods among men - those who go beyond expertise and have managed to become iconically associated with their craft. They alter the zeitgeist and define what must be for those following in their footsteps. John Carlton is a living deity of copywriting and word-smithing -- a guy who I'm proud to call both a mentor and a friend. If he is offering anything, you'd be a fool not to take it. You'll find the experience of earning more money and feeling your cerebral cortex evolving at the same time infinitely rewarding.

If you ever entered my office where I've made millions of dollars for myself and hundreds of millions for my clients, you'd probably be puzzled by the number of picture frames around the office. These frames have little snippets from John Carlton's emails and blog posts. Whenever I find one that hits home, and that's often, I cut them out and frame them. Above my computer is the famed "all clients suck" email. John's writings - whether in emails or blog posts - have helped guide me for over a dozen years.
His writing cuts through all the BS and goes to the core or what it means to have marketing chops. Now, you'll never find Carlton pushing the latest trick of the month -- in fact he shies from this crap like the plague. You'll only find proven techniques and advice from someone who's been there.
Today, due to Facebook and Twitter, we are used to seeing the same material regurgitated ad nauseum . The same video clips, the same stories, and the same click bait headlines. If you've become immune to the idea you can learn something new, then John's books will be like oxygen to a man in a vacuum.

"John Carltons blog posts interweave savvy marketing advice with guidance on how to be a good human. And he does it in a breezy, casual style I wish like mad I could capture as a writer. Practically every article has at least one nugget I write on a post it in my office to remind me how to be more successful in everything."

I picked up one of Carlton 's books in my young 30's and sure damn glad I did. It significantly altered the last decade of my life in an extremely profound way. As I approach 40 years old I often look back at my 30's and say "What a fucking ride!" and much of that wouldn't have been possible without what I learned from John along the way. Good choice picking up this book. Hope you get the kind of results I did!

John Carlton scares the shit out of me. And I mean that in the absolute best way possible. When I first got started in the direct marketing world as a young and cocky copywriter John beat the daylights out of me (Figuratively. He didnt actually HIT me for real until after Id earned his respect.). He tore my copy (which I naively thought was AWESOME) to tiny, whimpering shreds, forced me to question every assumption and belief I had about marketing and life, insulted my haircut, destroyed my illusions, mocked me viciously for my high fallutin vocabulary and cackled with absolute glee when I took everything he could throw at me and came back for more.
In other words, John made me a better copywriter, a better marketer, a better thinker and a better man.
A long time ago I realized that getting to a world-class level as a marketer and copywriter means fundamentally fucking with the way you look at the world. Theres simply no way you can be GREAT at this unless youre able to have an unflinching love affair with reality and are willing to toss everything you WANT to be true off a bridge.
