The Department of Communication is dedicated to advancing knowledge about communication and its practice in society. The department examines how meaning is created and negotiated in human interaction to address the personal, professional, and public communication challenges and opportunities posed by 21st century life. Our students become leaders in private, public and civil sectors by developing a deep and practical appreciation of how communication shapes the world in which we live. Research from SC&Is renowned faculty experts examines the complexity of communication processes related to five focal areas: communication and technology, health communication, interpersonal communication, language and social interaction, and organizational communication. SC&Is students may also acquire knowledge and skills allowing them to pursue careers related to strategic communication and public relations, leadership, health and wellness, relational and family communication, and a range of other options.
Students who major in Communication at the School of Communication and Information (SC&I) often find they have been presented with a unique, distinctive opportunity. Students have the opportunity to study in one of the few places on earth where each can learn how to skillfully craft messages that capture the attention of national and local audiences, while immersed strategically at the intersection of two of the worlds largest communication markets New York and Philadelphia. Our Communication students gain this experience while being a part of Rutgers, one of the nations oldest and most distinguished universities.
There may be no better place to develop the talents to be skilled communicators - those who are expected to foster collaborative and civil discourse, cope with conflict, elicit and share information, and make clear and persuasive presentations of ideas and concerns.
Students who graduate with a SC&I Communication major will have the skills to clearly communicate in many work situations, as well as in civil society and personal relationships. Thats because our 36-credit undergraduate major in Communication trains students to engage practically and intellectually in the face of contemporary challenges.
Majoring in Communication prepares students for careers in many industries, such as:
- Politics
- Entertainment/News Media
- Health Care
- Corporate Communication
- Media Analysis
- Political, Civic and Government Communication
- Publicity Management
- Civic Engagement Leadership
- Community Affairs
- Public Administration
- Public Health Policy
- Social Work
- Health Education
- Youth Advocacy
- Human Resource Management
- Training
Communication majors have opportunities to enhance their education by earning a specialization. Specializations include a diverse set of subjects, and consist of six courses (18 credits) that provide students with opportunities to present themselves as experts in several areas seen favorably by employers and organizations, thus increasing their marketability.
Specializations include:
- Leadership in Organizations and Community: The Leadership in Organizations and Community specialization helps individuals assume a leadership role in the workplace and in communities. Possessing knowledge and skills related to leadership communication are crucial for people who lead large-scale projects, direct programs, or facilitate teams. The demand for employees with leadership expertise is high across all sectors, including for-profit companies, nonprofits and government agencies.
- Health and Wellness Communication: Students who graduate with a specialization in Health and Wellness from the School of Communication and Information (SC&Is) Communication Major are equipped to conduct healthy-living campaigns in communities, help develop effective health policy, conduct health intervention research, or advise health providers about communication with patients and their families. Health communication professionals work to educate and inform the public, workplaces, schools, and communities about health and wellness issues that can improve everyones quality of life.
