This book is dedicated to my parents, Harry and Vera Grammond, who instilled in me a love for history at an early age and have always provided an unending amount of support toward me in whatever it is that Ive worked on. They have supported my photography journey these past forty years. They taught me a great work ethic, the importance of family and a sense of adventure. Thank you for all those hours of homework help and for fueling my passion for books through sending me to the Bookmobile in the summer and by ordering books through the school during the school year.

CONTENTS

FOREWORD

If youre the sort of person who enjoys the journey even more than the destination, you are in for a treat. Maybe I should say it this way instead. Do you like the hunt? If you do, Jay Grammond will prove to be the perfect guide. Jay will lead you into many neighborhoods, back streets and industrial parks in search of vintage ad signs.

I have known Jay for over fifteen years and have watched from both close and afar his passion for history and photography develop from a hobby to a career. Jay and I met for the first time under a canvas tent where I was selling my own photography and books at a Midwest art festival. I had just published my fourth book, Barns of Minnesota, which was the key to our conversation that day. Ever since that chance meeting, Jay and I have been great friends.

I have been an independent photographer and historian for over twenty-five years. I have published fifteen books on historic architecture and landscape and cant believe that I hadnt ever thought of writing a book on ghost signs. Great idea, Jay.

Jay will take you on an incredible journey back in time to when advertising was splashed on any surface that might catch the eye of the consumer. I have lived in Minneapolis for many years, and this book surprised me on how many signs are still visible in the Twin Cities. Why havent I noticed them? Jay uses the phrase hidden in plain sight, and sure enough, he is right. The photography is outstanding, and being a photographer myself, I appreciate the challenges that each of Jays shots took. The angles and lighting difficulties are immense when shooting in an urban environment. I encourage you to enjoy the photography, but dont overlook the story. Jay put in the time to tell us the background for each sign. The text reads like echoes from the past. Yes, the book is about fading ad signs in the Twin Cities of Minneapolis and St. Paul, but it is more than that; it is a snapshot of American commercial history and advertising. Each ghost sign in Jays book is satisfying yet leaves you wanting to peel back the page to see and read the next one.

Lastly, let this book remind all of us that history surrounds our daily life, and we just need to put on new spectacles to take it all in. Thank you, Jay, for sharing your passion with all of us.

D OUG O HMAN
