My interest in the lives of elders in developing countries stems from my earlier work in rural northeast Thailand, where, in 1994, I was one of a team researching home care of the terminally ill (Bennett et al. 1994, Williams et al. 1996). During this research I became particularly interested in the problems faced by the aged, who were frequently responsible for the delivery of health care in the home, at a time when they were likely to be disadvantaged themselves as a result both of their decreasing abilities as they grew older and the limited support offered to them by family, community and state.
