INTRODUCTION

I became hooked on succulents several years ago. It seemed almost every magazine I looked at featured these amazing plants. Then, one of my cousins had succulents in her wedding bouquet, and I knew I needed to get some. My collection started with just three plants, and soon grew to a couple hundred!

I was amazed at how easy they were to take care of. I soon became interested in creating projects with these versatile plants. Ive grown cold-hardy succulents outside in Utah, found heat-loving succulents for my home in Arizona, and continue to have a thriving indoor succulent garden. While most climates Ive lived in have not been ideal for succulents, Ive still been able to find success with these beautiful plants.

acknowledgments

This book would not have been possible without my parents, who let me turn two of their bedrooms and a bathroom into a succulent garden, potting shed, and photo studio. Also, a huge thanks to my mom, husband, and sister for being babysitters, photo assistants, and driving companions. The cute dog featured in the Common Pests and Problems section is Lucy, who belongs to Shaylee Linebaugh. The arrangements in was photographed in the home of Sarah Champion. Thank you to Waterwise Botanicals and Oasis Nursery for letting me photograph in their nurseries. While most of the arrangements in the book are my own, several were created by professional succulent designers, including Jim and Desiree Castro, Michael and Danielle Romero, Katie Christensen, Cindy Davison, Mimi Hong, Adam Kopras, and Erin Nielson.

Why are succulents so popular?

Almost anyone can find something to love about succulents, whether its their inherent beauty, the ease of keeping them alive, their drought-tolerant nature, or their ability to propagate so effortlessly.

Unique shapes and striking colors

Most people recognize succulents as rosette-shaped plants with smooth leaves and stunning colors. Echeveria, Sedum, and Sempervivum generally fit this category. They are so perfectly formed and come in a variety of stunning colors. Youll find variations of blue, purple, pink, green, orange, and rednearly every color of the rainbow!

Once youre hooked on the rosettes, youll discover there are many more shapes and textures of succulents youre sure to love. This variety of shape and texture also attracts many people to succulents. Succulents are used frequently in containers, both by themselves and paired with other plants. They have clean geometric shapes that work well in modern design.

easy to grow Like all plants its best if you know how to care for succulents - photo 6
easy to grow

Like all plants, its best if you know how to care for succulents. However, youll find succulents are pretty forgiving. For people who may not have a green thumb (and for those who do), succulents are a great place to start. Many varieties can handle quite a bit of abuse or neglect and still look gorgeous. You can find succulents to suit just about any growing conditions. For example, if youre in a small space without a lot of light, youll find Haworthia and Gasteria to be a great fit for you.

drought tolerant Succulents store water in their leaves which makes them quite - photo 7
drought tolerant

Succulents store water in their leaves, which makes them quite drought tolerant. Youll frequently see succulents used in waterwise gardens or even as a replacement for lawns. While they do need water, in the right environment many succulents can go weeks between watering. For those growing succulents indoors, this drought tolerance means succulents are perfect if you tend to forget to water your plants. You can leave them while youre on vacation without a worry! Many floral designers use succulents in bouquets and floral arrangements because they can last several days without being watered and still look fresh.
