The fourth industrial revolution, Industry 4.0, involves several technology domains, including robotics and artificial intelligence. Robotics and Artificial Intelligence will become omnipresent in near future. As per the World Economy Forum October 2020 Future of Jobs Report, by 2025, 97 million new job roles may emerge that are more adapted to the new division of labour among humans, machines, and algorithms. While 85 million jobs may be displaced by the shift of labour among humans and machines. Exposing young minds to Robotics and Artificial Intelligence is the need of the hour for preparing for such a future. This practical guide to robotics using Robot Operating Systems (ROS) will facilitate that process.

Robotics involves design, dynamics, statics, sensing, actuation, path planning, control, and manipulation. Good understanding of Mathematics and Physics is essential in robotics. Due to the hardware requirements and cost associated with, it is difficult to jumpstart developments in robotics. With the advent of Robot Operating System (ROS), the design, testing and fine tuning of robot operations in virtual worlds has become straight forward. ROS provides rich libraries for hardware abstraction, device drivers, visualizers, message-passing, and management. The Computer Aided Design (CAD) files for a build space can be imported into ROS and the robots can be made to perform in virtual spaces. The performance improvements can be tested, learned and fine-tuned in virtual spaces. ROS is a powerful environment for learning. Industries use ROS Industrial for fast development of robotic systems. ROS is considered as the Digital Twin for experimenting.

The authors of the book have made use of ROS for imparting the essential domain knowledge and practical implementation steps which are easier for beginners. The chapters on AI and robot design compliment the rest of the chapters. The chapters on Vision and Simultaneous Localization and Mapping (SLAM) are important from practical realization of robot operations in real worlds. The complex SLAM concepts are explained in an easy-to-understand manner. Hope that this book will excite new minds to jumpstart robotics development from a young age. Such minds can lead to newer ideas and concepts paving the way for new start-ups and employment generation.
