Introduction
The History of Zentangle
Zentangle is a new style of drawing in deliberate steps with a pre-learned toolkit of patterns. This art form has been developed by Rick Roberts and Maria Thomas. The story of how it started is an amazing example of how something beautiful is born when two fields or careers overlap or when people with different ideas share and build something new.
On their website Rick and Maria share their story. Maria was explaining to Rick how when she drew background images on a manuscript she was working on , she felt free and focused. He explained that these were the basic feelings one tried to achieve while meditating and so they started to develop the Zentangle method to aid people to achieve a sense of serenity and focus while drawing simple patterns.
What I love most about this art form is that a ll the patterns are based on simple lines, circles and shapes. Anyone can do it. The beauty of Zentangle lies in the way these patterns evolve from their simple building blocks. Different patterns are put together to create small tiles or square drawings.
This new approach to art is structured and breaks down seemingly impossible to replicate pieces of art into doable steps. Coming from a mathematical and engineering background with a passion for the arts, I absolutely love this idea! Big problems are solved by breaking them down into smaller actionable steps. Large products are developed by breaking down the plan into step-by-step bullets. Now you can create beautiful pieces of art by learning a few simple patterns! How awesome!
The Zentangle approach encourages you to focus on each stroke and make it deliberate. Ideally you are not to use an eraser and any mistake made is a new opportunity to change the direction of the piece. This is the creative freedom of the Zentangle method. The freedom and rules go hand in hand making this an amazing art form for left and right brained people. The joy is in the journey of creating and that is what you are encouraged to enjoy and focus on. The outcome will automatically be beautiful and you do not have to worry about it.
The entire process should be carried out without any predetermined notions. Just let the art take you wh ere it does and youll end up in a beautiful place.
You do not need a lot of materials to start with the Zentangle method. In fact you can start now with just this book but as you learn more you will realize that using a few good art materials does help. My advice is to try and use high quality materials because you and your art are worth it. I have tried tangling on copy paper and on actual Zentangle tiles (available on the official website www.Zentangle.com ) and believe me, the difference is vast.
Zentangle art has been used by artists from all over the globe and from all art fields. They have incorporated Zentangle art into everything from mixed media, paper crafting, scrap booking to home dcor projects. A simple search on Google images will reveal the vast world of Zentangle art!
Zentangle art has also been used by kids all over the world to have fun and make paper toys.
With this book Zentangle art can now be used by you to rest, relax, create and make art!
This book is perfect for the beginner as well as the experienced tangler. We will go through the list of tools needed, basic tangles created by Rick and Maria, Zentangle Inspired Projects, creating new tangles and lots of worksheets for you to play with and have fun.
I hope you enjoy this book as much as I have enjoyed playing with this new art form. It can truly change your life and help you create beautiful pieces of art. If you have always wanted to be creative and an artist and have felt you just couldnt, this is the perfect art style to break all those barriers.
I am sharing my love of the Zentangle art form with you through this book and my own personal experiences with it. I have read a few books on this new form and have made a lot of my own Zentangle inspired art. I havent yet had the opportunity to attend one of Rick and Marias Zentangle Sessions and so am not a Certified Zentangle Teacher (CZT). This book is meant to share with you my Zentangle journey, if you feel you would like to learn more about this art form please go to www.zentangle.com and look for a CZT in your area. They often have a lot of good workshops planned. You can also get Rick and Marias book on the subject.
So left brained or right brained, artist or scientist, child or adult join us in this wonderful journey as we discover and create awesome doodles and tangles.
