The Use of Accent Lines
in Flower Arranging
The Accent Lines that are the subject of this book refer to illusory lines that
can define the overall shape of a flower arrangement. The use of Accent Lines
is a technique where we consider in depth the way we perceive things and
then how we can take advantage of those illusions. The way that we inter
pret the things we see often differs a lot from what is actually there. Accent
Lines take advantage of this gap between reality and interpretation to the
fullest, to show flower arrangements that appear truly beautiful. By using
Accent Lines, you can give movement and allure to your arrangements. In
other words, they are truly magic lines.
Accent Lines have evolved in my mind over the years, progressing beyond
just being illusory lines that fool the eye. This is fully explained in Chapter
2, where I break down the Accent Lines of several flower arrangements. To
start, Accent Lines breathe life into a flower arrangement by giving them
movement. They also can change the shapes of a flower arrangement, as if by
magic. Keep these in mind as you learn the techniques and theories of Accent
Lines in this book.

CHAPTER 1
Outlines and Accent Lines
Lesson 1
How the Eye Sees Flowers
In general, Accent Lines can be described as lines that take advantage of how
the human eye can be fooled. In order to master the use of Accent Lines, we
need to understand how you see an arrangement.
An example of
an uneven,
poorly balanced,
arrangement.
An example of what not to do
The flowers in this round example
are poorly balanced, and the
way each flower is arranged in
the container is not good. But
what happens when we add some
babys breath? See the next page.
Just by adding babys breath, the same arrangement looks a lot more
cohesive. This occurs because the eye first sees the smooth and even
outline formed by the babys breath followed by the other flowers within
the outline. By using babys breath whose stems are longer than the other
flowers, the entire arrangement looks a lot bigger because of of the outline
this creates. This is an illusion created by Accent Lines.
By simply adding
babys breath, the same
arrangement looks more
cohesive. This is the
illusion or fooling
the eye function
of Accent Lines.

FLOWERS AND GREENERY USED:
Rose, Peruvian lily (Alstroemeria), lisianthus (Eustoma), babys
breath (Gypsophila elegans), shallon (Gaultheria shallon) leaf.
Lesson 2
About Outlines and Accent Lines
Outlines are very important when creating flower arrangements since the
outline of an arrangement is what defines its shape. If the outline is elongated,
the arrangement is long and tall; if it spreads horizontally then it is a wide
arrangement.
Accent Lines use the power of illusion to sculpt the outline or shapeas in
the example on the previous page with the babys breath. By adding Accent
Lines to arrangements, you can make them look bigger, give them move
ment, change the mood, and do any number of other things. Accent Lines
have a big influence on the Outline of an arrangement. With this in mind,
lets examine two flower arrangements. Although they both have the same
Outline (the blue line), the second has Accent Lines added in the form of
dracaena leaves.
Basic arrangement
FLOWERS AND GREENERY USED:
Roses, tulips, dahlias, cone bush (Leucadendron platyspermum),
flowering quince (Chaenomeles speciosa), dracaena leaves
IMPORTANT POINTS
By adding dracaena to create Accent Lines, you can see
that the arrangement now dominates the space it occupies
more than in the original Outline. When the space occupied
by the arrangement increases, the flowers and leaves that
were previously inside the Outline are emphasized. This is
the effect Accent Lines can have.
The Outline is
expanded, and the
arrangement
has more volume!

Lesson 3
Changing Shapes with Accent Lines
Example with a Round Arrangement
The most profound effect that Accent Lines have is to change the entire shape of
an arrangement. Here is an example of a simple round arrangement, and how to
transform it by adding Accent Lines, as shown on the facing page. Three examples
of Accent Line transformations are provided.
Before Accent Lines are added
FLOWERS AND GREENERY USED:
Roses, Peruvian lilies (Alstroemeria), lisianthus (Eustoma), other
IMPORTANT POINTS
You can see right away that adding Accent Lines changes the shape of the arrangement. A mun
dane round shape that looks the same from every angle can be transformed with Accent Lines into
one that provides a different and more dramatic view from each side.

Example 2 Adding width
Example 3 Adding circular movement
Example with a Triangular Arrangement
This tall arrangement is characterized by its triangular outline and the fact
that it can be viewed differently from three sides. By adding Accent Lines
to a standard arrangement like this, you can vary the shape quite a lot.
Before Accent Lines are added
FLOWERS AND GREENERY USED:
Carnations, lisianthus (Eustoma), calla lilies, dracaena,
leatherleaf fan (Rumohra adiantiformis)
IMPORTANT POINTS
The red willow put in the middle has a curved line, which not only faces upwards, but draws a curve that
surrounds the arrangement and makes it look bigger. And when the red willow branches are put in the
sides, the Accent Lines go up as well as sideways, increasing its volume and adding a sense of movement.
When adding Accent Lines to a triangular form with straight lines, making them curvy is really effective.

Example 2 Adding horizontal curves
Example with a Horizontal Arrangement
Lets see how we can change a horizontal arrangement by adding Accent Lines.
Here weve tried two versions, one with vertical lines and another with horizontal lines.
