Acknowledgments

Once again I wish to express my great indebtedness to Mr. Kasen Yoshimura, grandmaster of the Ryusei School of Ikebana, in Tokyo, who played a crucial role in the publication of this book, just as he did in the early 1960s, when he supported the publication of my first book on Ikebana, The Art of Arranging Flowers . Mr. Kashu Yoshimura, junior grandmaster of the Ryusei School, and the talented professors at the school also deserve my sincere thanks for their support and assistance. Many of the professors at the Ryusei School who provided arrangements for my first book on Ikebana have passed away, but their talents are carried forward by a number of their direct descendents and students who created the arrangements illustrated in this book.

Chief editor Reikiya Imai and his staff at the schools monthly magazine, Ikebana Ryusei , unstintingly gave their time and effort to research and prepare the photographs of the flower arrangements for this book. I offer my sincere appreciation. Mr. Tokio Yamanouchi, a well-known documentary film producer and folk-art researcher, and my classmate in college, provided important photographs of a tokonoma in the home of a well-known family in Japan.

I greatly appreciate and thank the Tuttle Publishing Company for producing this bookin particular, publishing director Edward Walters, senior editor Holly Jennings, and former acquisitions editor Jennifer Brown. Finally, I wish to thank my wife, Alice Ogura Sato, who has given me continual support and spent many hours editing the manuscript. I take this opportunity to give my sincere thanks and appreciation to all who have assisted and supported me in this project.
