Foreword
If youve been diagnosedwith diabetes, or even prediabetes, you are not alone. Diabetes is the fastest-growing global condition today, affecting millions of people. There is no cure for diabetes, except for extreme cases where weight-loss surgery in morbidly obese patients has proven to reduce severe insulin resistance. Depending on the stage of the condition, however, diabetes can be controlled very well.

In some early cases, it can even be reversed.Since diabetes is environmental as much as it is genetic, modifying some causal factors can make a difference. Getting adequate sleep, sitting less, coping with stress differently, and substituting bad habits with good ones are a few examples of changes that can help manage diabetes.Diet is another factor that plays a vital role. Its essential to remember that a diabetes diagnosis does not prohibit you from enjoying most food you eat on a daily basis. Nothing is off limits is important information that people with diabetes need to know. Some nonfood items should be reduced significantly for sure. Attending diabetes education classes will give you a better idea of the distinction between food and nonfood, which is very confusing these days.

To be safe, check food labels for ingredients that read as difficult-to-pronounce chemicalsthese should be considered nonfood items. While you can still enjoy most foods, knowledge of how much is enough plays a critical role when choosing food categories, types, and amounts to make up a balanced diet.In addition to preparing your meals appropriately, consuming them in controlled portions in a timely manner will help maintain your metabolic rhythm. If you can also keep a regular activity routine, your diabetes will be managed much more consistently, together with other metabolic factors such as blood pressure and cholesterol. Keeping all these factors controlled is an important part of preventing possible complications including, but not limited to, stroke, heart attack, and kidney and liver diseases. As an endocrinologist, my goal is to help my patients avoid or prevent serious complications from diabetes. Lifestyle modifications are fundamental in managing metabolic conditions and have the highest impact on a persons health and well-being. Ive had the privilege of working with Lori Zanini as one of the certified diabetes educators we physicians heavily rely on to provide patients and families with these valuable pieces of information and tireless guidance.

Loris expertise as a registered dietitian added tremendously to her contribution in this role.In this book, Lori has compiled simple recipes and snack ideas, always paired with a breakdown of nutritional values that will help guide you in creating safe yet delicious dishes. I hope everyone can enjoy their favorite foods while continuing to pursue their endeavor to be healthy, and I believe this book is a valuable resource for achieving that goal.Nandar Swe, MD

Introduction
If you have ever felt overwhelmedby your diabetes diagnosis and unsure about what to eat, you are not alone. Every year 1.7 million Americans are diagnosed with diabetes, yet many of them do not receive the vital nutrition education that could actually improve their blood sugar levels, prevent diabetes complications, and increase their energy to strengthen their overall quality of life. Diabetes is a condition that is largely self-managed. This means that the positive habits you practice on a daily basis have the potential to improve the outcome of your health. You can even begin noticing an improvement in your diabetes and blood sugar levels after eating just a single healthy, balanced meal now thats motivating! If you are like most people, the subject of foodwhat you are (or arent) eating, and how to eat properlyis a daily topic of conversation.

Despite the constant buzz of new diet trends, celebrity diets, and detoxes, I encourage you to realize that nutrition is a science, not an opinion, so you need to get your facts from trusted health professionals. Even though we have more nutrition information at our fingertips than ever before, it can be challenging to recognize a dieting fad versus a real, sustainable way of eating that will actually benefit our bodies. And is it too much to ask that we actually
