Chapter 1: Detailed Tiny Home Building Instructions
Hiring a contractor or building your own tiny house, versusbuying a home already pre-built is one option. Building from acustom design allows you to have more control over what goes intothe home. Pre-built tiny homes are made based off of plans. Some ofthese plans were provided to the company via a past customer andthe architect at the company created others. There is nothing wrongwith going with one of these plans. However, one of the greatestthings about tiny houses is making it an individualized home. Itcan be the most audacious design or just like every other home yousee rolling down the road. Allowing your creativity to be placed onthe exterior and interior of your home is a wonderfulexperience. There are advantages of going with a contractor for yourtiny home, unless you have the same or similar background. Acontractor will know local building codes. They will havesub-contractors to call for the plumbing and electrical work.Contractors will create the plans based on your input, get thepermits, and be on hand from stage one to the completion of yourhome. You will have someone to get advice from, regarding allstages of building. The biggest disadvantage of hiring a contractoris the extra costs it will take to build your home. Individualswith experience have built tiny homes for $10,000. Theseindividuals typically find material they can reuse, build the housewith theirown hands, and do as much of the work as is possible based on theirskills. It means they save the amount a contractor would charge forlabor. The fee a contractor charges for their labor and any helpersis well worth it, when you do not have the knowledge to build yourown home. You do not want the home to have structural issues andyou would not expect someone to do your job without knowledge.Budget for any professional help you will need. You can always findproducts to re-use, by shopping at Habitat for Humanity Restores, flea markets, and antique stores. If you have an old barn on yourproperty or something else in your family that can be turned into anew house, use those materials. Wherever you can save on thematerials, the better, since it will lower the overall costs ofbuilding your home. Benefits of Building Building your own home comes withvarious benefits. While there may be a drawback on the time youtake to build the home and the contractor costs, the benefits oftenoutweigh the negatives. You get to choose the floor plan based onyour style. For example, if you want a guestroom/office with accessto the bathroom you can incorporate this into your plan. You willbe in on what materials are used rather than going with what isalready in the home. A pre-fab home may have specific colors, cabinets, and countertops. With a custom design that you build orhave a contractor build, you choose the materials. You can decideif butcher block, quartz, marble, or granite is within your budgetand incorporate it into your home. You choose the various fixtures for thefaucets, lights, and doors. If you prefer you can have a Japanesestyle screen door versus a pocket door. It is also possible to savemoney on the design because you are choosing the materials usedversus what a pre-fab company offers. Most pre-fab companies havespecific components that they use, such as a washer/dryer all inone combination versus leaving space for a stackable set. Thesecompanies may also use certain brands, where you can shop for abrand that fits your budget.
Chapter 2 : Building The Kitchen And Bathroom
Nomatter what home youre going to be in, youll need a kitchen.Everyone needs to eat, and you cant always rely on fast food. However, your kitchen cant occupy too much of your home, but itstill should be able to fit all of your personal needs as well asyour cooking habits. Some Steps for Building: You may still be ableto get your dream kitchen, but itll require you to be able tocompromise. Following these building steps below, itll help you tomake sure that you have a kitchen that is small, efficient and youcan be proud of. Cooking Power: Youll first need to think aboutyour cooking power. If youre going off-grid, its best to choosesolar power. Wind power just wont be enough. However, natural gaswill usually work as well. Liquid propane is a great way to cook, and youllbe able to conserve energy with it as well. Think about Numbers:You need to think about the number of people youre going to becooking for when youre building your kitchen. Youll need a largerkitchen if you have a larger number of people. Itll require moredaily food consumption, which will require more storage space aswell as cooking supplies. Think Requirements: Its also importantthat you think about all of the requirements that you use whencooking. Think about what you need, and then think about yourluxuries when cooking. Try to eliminate as many luxuries as youcan, and youll soon learn to cook without them, which will helpyou to downsize so that you can fit everything into a smallerkitchen. Think Budget: You cant just ignore your budget. Even whenbuilding your dream home. Even a tiny home can get expensive, andyour budget will determine how big of a kitchen youll be able tobuild. If youre on a tighter budget, youll need to strip awaymore luxuries so that you can make sure that you have a kitchenthat is functional. It being functional is the most important part, and you may need to go with the bare essentials. Set Space: Youllneed to set up space as well for a refrigerator, but you shouldntneed a large one unless you have a large family. With a tiny home, you may have to go shopping more often because you wont have thatmuch room, especially if you choose to eat a raw diet. Some KitchenOptions: Its important to have a conservative option for a tinyhouse, and theres a few more things youll need to think about.Layout: Layout is extremely important, and you need to choose onethat ensures that your kitchen is efficient. Its important to becreative, but you do need to think about what will be best for you.Make sure that everything is within range to grab easily, and thatmeans youll want your sink, cooking range, and fridge within armsreach so that youll be able to keep everything clean. Countertops:An economical kitchen will be important, but youll also need somespace for countertops. You wont be able to cook without them. Thisis where youll be preparing your meal. What type of countertopsyou get will depend on your budget and design plans. Ovens &Ranges: Not everyone actually needs and oven, so ask yourself ifyou really do. If you have the room, need, or even just the moneyyou may wantto add at least a small oven. However, always keep in mind that anoven will actually consume a lot of energy, which can be hard ifyoure living off the grid. Its not sustainable in most tinyhomes. Refrigerator: Going off the grid, doesnt mean that you haveto get rid of the refrigerator. It does mean that youll want apropane or solar powered one. C utting in a Restroom You dont want to skip out on arestroom, even if youre building a tiny home. However, youll needto keep in mind that your space is still limited. In some cases, itis extremely limited. When you use the space properly, youll beable to put in a restroom. There are many different types oftoilets that youll need to consider though. Youll first want tokeep in mind about cost so that you get something that isaffordable as well as suitable for your needs. Make sure that youstay within your budget. Youll also want to do your research firstso that you know that youre buying the right one. Get somethingthat separates solid waste from urine if possible, as itll help toreduce odor, especially if you dont have normal plumbing. Thereare a few things that you need to consider. RV Low Flush Toilets: These aregreat for almost any tiny home, but theyre especially great ifyoure using a tiny home thats mobile. However, youll need toempty them regularly, as discussed before. This will be a weeklycharge. You can still use this type of toilet if youre connectedto a sewage system as well, which will have it drained directly. Its a very small facility, but it doesnt harbor bad smells, andits also very clean. You need to have fresh water for this to bean option. An Incinerating Toilet: This is a toilet that youregoing to want to consider if there isnt a lot of water. Thisconnects to power, however. Youll need a power source, but itllburn all of your waste to ash, and then youll just need to emptythe ash. You can do this about once a week or when you deem fit. Itall depends on you. Though, they can be quite expensive, and itll usea lot of power on top of it. Composting Toilets: This is anotheroption for your toilet, especially if you want to beenvironmentally friendly. Youll need aeration and ventilation aswell. Itll take your solid waste to decompose, but it will allowurine to be diverted into a small holding system that will needdumped out. They are self-contained, and they can be done with orwithout water. Its even able to be used with or without power. Its great if youre short on space, and these toilets can even beput outside. Showers: Showers are a must as well. Even in your tinyhome, but you need to keep in mind that you most likely wont haveroom for a tub. You can get a shower that is already built in, oryou can get one that can be attached inside or outside of your home ifyour tiny home is stable. If youre trying to keep your shower roomseparate, youll want to have a tie back onto the wall, which willallow you to feel as if you have bigger space. Its an illusion, but it can help to avoid claustrophobia. A fiberglass shower isalso a great idea, and it gives you an open shower plan which willallow you to contain the splashing of water. Itll be ashower enclosure, which can help you to save on space. You canalways look for ideas in home magazines, and youll even find manydesigns on the web. Look for whats efficient, trending, and whatdoesnt require a lot of energy or upkeep.
