Forward I did a great deal of research onCrohn's disease when I first learned my grandson was afflicted withthis condition. I presented to you all my research in my book, The Embarrassing Truth About Crohns Disease ANDHow To Cure It . In my book, I explained to you how mygrandson was so embarrassed because he had Crohn's that he didn'twant the family to know at all. I wish I could tell you that he iswell, but he has had serious problems since the writing of my book.He has had several surgeries, and I feel that he has suffered muchmore because he won't go on a strict diet for Crohn's. Hisnon-restricted unhealthy diet just keeps aggravating hiscondition. I don't think you can cure your Crohn'sDisease if you don't go on a strict diet and stay away from foodsthat are irritating your digestive system so badly that your bowelswill bleed, which will result in you having to undergo painfulsurgery.

Crohn's Disease can kill you. This is a fact and you needto be aware and eat nutritious foods that sooth your digestivesystem, yet made to taste delicious, delectable andtasty. I decided to write another Crohn's bookthat can go hand in hand with my first book, and so this book,Crohn's Disease Diet and Cookbook, can be put on yourdesktop so that you can have it readily available for referencewhen you plan your meals and menus. Table of Contents Chapter One Crohn's Disease What Isit? Crohn's disease is an inflammatoryprocess that can affect any portion of the alimentary canal fromthe mouth to the anus. One-third of the cases involve only thesmall bowel, most commonly called the terminal ileum (ileitis).About half the cases involve the small bowel and the colon. Crohn'sdisease is a process that can result in mucosal inflammation andulceration, stricturing, fistulous development, and abscessformation.

The age most people develop Crohn'sdisease is between the ages of 15 and 35. Approximately 20% ofpeople with Crohn's disease have a sibling, parent or child withsome form of IBD. Men and women are at equal risk, while people ofEuropean heritage are more likely to develop thedisease. In some of the earlier medicaltextbooks, the disease is similar to Regional Ileitis orUlcerated colitis with some of the same symptoms. Thesesymptoms were a tender fixed mass in the lower abdomen, thepresence of external fistulous tract on perirectal abscesses orfistulas, Diarrhea milder than in colitis, often intermittent, alow-grade fever, and a negative sigmoidoscopy. An American Gastroenterologist BurrillBernard Crohn, who in 1932, along with two colleagues, described aseries of patients with inflammation of the terminal ileum, the area most commonly affected by the illness.

So Crohn's diseasewas named after him. Crohn's disease has also been called regionalileitis or regional enteritis. However, some medical experts hadindependently identified the condition in the medical literatureprior, to Burriel Bernard Crohn's time. The most notable was AntoniLeniowski, a Polish surgeon for whom the condition is additionallynamed (Leniowski-Crohn's disease) in the Polishliterature. Crohn's Disease is really a detective'sdream, as searching for the cause takes a lot of detective work onthe part of the doctor who is treating you. There was a doctorturned sleuth named Dr.

Thomas K Dalziel of Glasgow, Scotland whowas such a detective. His theory was that this intestinal illnesshad something in common with a disease that was found in cattle.Slow growing bacteria called Mycobacterium avium subspeicies Paratuberculosis caused this disease in cattle. When he tested thediseased tissue of humans the Doctor found nothing. So some moresleuthing had to be done. The next doctor sleuth was Dr. Crohn. He was the doctor that the disease was named after.

He was not ableto detect any evidence of a bacterial beginning for Crohn'sdisease. Thereby this disease has been classified as an autoimmunedisease. This disease was then treated with maintenanceregimes. Enter one doctor sleuth by the name ofDr. Walter R. Thayer, Jr., who was a professor at Brown UniversityMedical College in Rhode Island.

He was a Gastroenterologist, andhe specialized in Crohn's disease. Dr. Thayer along with Dr.Chiodini studied this disease together, trying to find its puzzlepieces and how best to treat it. There study was to find aninfectious agent that might be the true cause of Crohn's. Study ofthis disease is on going and the mystery of the disease still needsa lot of detective work, but let's see what we have learned sofar. Chapter Two Crohn's Disease Symptoms andSigns Chronic inflammatoryDisease-This is one of the most common symptoms of Crohn'sdisease.

There may be fever, and a general feeling of malaise, weight loss, lack of energy, cramping, diarrhea, and steady pain inthe right lower quadrant. There could be focal tenderness also inthe right lower quadrant. A palpable, tender mass may be present inthe lower abdomen. Extraintestinal Manifestations( situated or occurring outside theintestines)- Other symptoms can manifestthemselves in Crohn's disease. Oral lesions are common along withincreased signs of gallstones due to the body not absorbing thebile salts from the intestines. IntestinalObstruction Inflammation can cause thenarrowing of the small bowel (The small intestine, or small bowel, lays between the stomach and the colon).

The small intestine isabout 6 m (20 ft) long. Its primary function is to digest andabsorb nutrients. The small intestine makes up more than 70% of thelength and 90% of the surface area of the gastrointestinal (GI)tract). There may be bloating, cramping pains and loud rumbling orgrowling of the stomach. Fistula - (In medicine, a fistula (pl.fistulas or fistulae) is an abnormal connection or passagewaybetween two epithelium-lined organs or vessels that normally do notconnect). Fistula is generally adisease condition, but a fistula may be surgically created fortherapeutic reasons.

Fistulas may be seen in a number of areas andcan result in intra-abdominal abscesses. They can manifestthemselves with fever, chills with a tender abdominal mass andleukocytosis. (Leukocytosis is a raised white blood cell count (theleukocyte count) above the normal range). If a fistula occurs inthe area from the colon to the small intestine or stomach, it canresult in an overgrowth of bacteria that will result in diarrhea, weight loss and malnutrition. Recurring infections can result ifthere are fistulas to the bladder or vagina. Anal Disease A few of the patients willdevelop anal fistulas and abscesses.
