Before You Begin
Now, more than ever before, our nation needs qualified and dedicated individuals to join the U.S. Border Patrol. The men and women of the Border Patrol not only prevent illegal aliens and contraband from entering the United States, but they also protect our country from terrorists and their weapons. This book was carefully researched and written to help you navigate the Border Patrol screening process. The information provided will prepare you for the written exam, educate you on the physical skills you need, and give you valuable tips to help you succeed during your oral interview. Knowing what to expect along the way will help you feel confident in your chances of becoming a Border Patrol Agent.
HOW THIS BOOK IS ORGANIZED
To get the most out of this book, take the time to read each section carefully and thoroughly.
Part I provides an overview of the duties of Border Patrol Agents and the qualifications required. It also offers information about the history of the U.S. Border Patrol, the working conditions that Border Patrol Agents face every day, and the benefits that they enjoy. This information will give you a sense of a Border Patrol Agent's responsibilities and the various opportunities for advancement within the Department of Homeland Security (DHS). Part I also provides a detailed explanation of the Border Patrol screening process. The book offers step-by-step instructions for registeringfor the written test, undergoing the structured oral interview, and preparing for the fitness test and background investigation. Notes and tips aregiven to help you understand each step of the process. |
Part II is a preview of the written examination. This section introduces you to the kinds of questions you will see on the Logical Reasoning Test, the Spanish Language Proficiency Test, and the Artificial Language Test (ALT). Part II was designed to help you assess your strengths and weaknesses so that you can concentrate on the areas that need improvement. This section will also help you determine if you should take the Spanish Language Proficiency Test or the Artificial Language Test. |
Part III is a comprehensive overview of the types of questions you will see on the Logical Reasoning Test, the Spanish Language Proficiency Test, and the Artificial Language Test. This section offers tips for understanding and completing each section of the test. Feel free to highlight tips you find useful and make notes in the margins. Each chapter in this part begins with a detailed explanation of the kinds of questions you will encounter on each test, and it offers practical suggestions about how to answer the questions. Read the instructions in each chapter and try the practice questions. Then study the answer explanations. You can learn a great deal from them. Even if you answer the question correctly, take the time to review the answer explanation. You may discover a new tip that will help you answer other questions. The answer explanations also reinforce your understanding of the questions. |
When you feel that you are well prepared, move on to Part IV the Practice Tests. These practice examinations contain new questions modeled after the samples provided in the Custom and Border Protection's Preparation Manual for the U.S. Border Patrol Test. It is important to note that these are merely samples of the types of questions you may encounter on the Border Patrol Test. They are not the actual questions that you will see on the exam. If possible, try to work through an entire exam in one sitting. If you must divide your time, divide it into no more than two sessions per exam. You do not need to take the first exam first. You may want to save the longer exam for a period when you have a stretch of uninterrupted time available. When you do take the exams, time yourself accurately. This will help you assess the amount of time you can devote to each question. Do not look at the correct answers until you have completed the exam. Remember, these tests are for practice, and they will not be scored. Take the time to learn from any mistakes you may make. |
The Appendix offers a detailed overview of the fellowships, internships, and student programs offered by the Department of Homeland Security (DHS). This section discusses the Student Temporary Employment Program (STEP), the Student Career Experience Program (SCEP), Student Volunteers (SV), the Bureau of Customs and Border Protection (CBP) Explorer Program, Federal Career Intern Program (FCIP), and the Presidential Management Fellowship (PMF). |
Remember to carefully read each chapter in this book. This will give you a better understanding of the responsibilities of a Border Patrol Agent and help you prepare for the written examination.
