Before You Begin
Overview
How This Book Is Organized
Massage therapy is an excellent career choice for individuals who enjoy working closely with others and have the ability to affect positive change through touch. Massage therapists enjoy many benefits such as the choice of working environments, a flexible schedule, and the ability to make a competitive salary with part-time work. The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics reports that the number of available massage therapist jobs is expected to increase by 19 percent through 2018, faster than the average for all occupations.
If you are interested in becoming a massage therapist, you must meet all requirements set by your state regulatory board before you can practice. Although requirements vary, most states require massage therapists to complete a formal educational program as well as pass an examination before licensing will be granted. The examinations most frequently used for this purpose are the National Certification Examinations (NCEs) offered by the National Certification Board for Therapeutic Massage and Bodywork (NCBTMB) and the Massage and Bodywork Licensing Examination (MBLEx) offered by the Federation of State Massage Therapy Boards (FSMTB).
This book was carefully researched to help you prepare to successfully enter this career field. To get the most out of this book, take the time to read each section carefully and thoroughly.
Part I provides an overview of personal traits that lend themselves to this career field, as well as general job responsibilities and the kinds of places you can expect to work. Part I covers educational requirements and the content areas covered on most licensing examinations. It also emphasizes the differences in licensing requirements from state to state and points you to resources that will help you determine the requirements which apply to you.
Part II is a diagnostic examination designed to help you pinpoint your trouble areas with the content commonly found in the licensing exams. You will have the opportunity to answer questions in anatomy, physiology, kinesiology, pathology, and therapeutic massage assessment and application, as well as in the ethics, standards, and business practices you are expected to follow in your practice. A complete answer guide is provided, including explanations, so that you can check your knowledge.
Part III is an overview of the different content areas covered on the NCE and MBLEx. Each chapter is devoted to a specific subject area and provides a brief review of the topic to refresh your memory of what you learned in school. At the end of each chapter you will find multiple-choice questions similar to those you can expect to answer on the examinations. You will also find answer explanations that you should read, even when you answer the questions correctly. The explanations may include additional information that may help you to answer other questions.
Part IV provides two complete practice tests. One of these tests is a sample MBLEx and the other is a sample National Certification Examination for Therapeutic Massage and Bodywork (NCETMB). Although the questions are not those you will answer on either of the exams, they are designed to mimic the examination content closely. You will get the most from these exams if you time yourself and work through the exam in one sitting.
The Appendixes section offers a variety of resources that will help you in your quest to become a licensed massage therapist. Take the time to review these references as you work your way through this book.
