DEDICATION
To my mom, Lucile (with one L) Jacobs,
who has always been a creative and supportive influence.
To my sister, Mariann (19542003),
who loved her secret garden and quiltmaking, and had
a special flair for color, home decor and storytelling.
special thanks
When I develop a new workshop, I design the projects and handouts, and (I hope) control the ebb and flow of the class. How-to books are a collaborative effort. As the author of this book, I had to relinquish control to several people, and this doesn't come easy for me. Nevertheless I thoroughly enjoyed working with these professionals at North Light Books and found it an exciting learning experience. I want to thank them big-time for the care and expertise they brought to this project:
Krista Hamilton, editor, for her superb job of handling the text and organization.
Christine Polomsky, photographer, whose step-by-step pictures are composed and exposed so clearly.
Stephanie Strang, designer extraordinaire, for her amazing ability to make so much stuff look so visually appealing and yet different from her previous books.
Thank you, Teri Martin and Creative Imaginations, for providing the beautiful scrapbook papers and stickers used for many of the cards and envelopes in this book.
Thank you, Barbara Richards, artist and friend, for turning my handwritten quotes into computer-generated text blocks used on cards throughout this book.
Thank you, students, friends and family for your continued support and encouragement over many years. Words cannot do justice to how much this means to me.
And finally, thank you, Judy, whose love and support have been unwavering and freely given for eighteen years, and whose many talents never cease to amaze me.

introduction
My goal with this book is to show you step-by-step how to make a wide variety of action cards. As you learn the skills and techniques needed to construct the simple cards at the beginning of the book, you will automatically gain confidence for the cards that follow, which are nothing more than simple cards with multiple parts.
Pop-ups are the most common type of action cards. My lifelong fascination with pop-ups began as a child, when my mother brought home my first of many pop-up books. I was mesmerized by the varied mechanisms and spent countless hours pouring over them from all angles, trying to figure out how these magical structures worked.
When I was about eight years old, I asked my mom to save candy, soap, perfume and gift boxes for me. I placed the boxes around my bedroom in groupings that resembled miniature cities. My young mind was intrigued by the reality that flat sheets of paper and cardboard could become sturdy, beautiful, three-dimensional boxes. How was it done? I didn't have a clue.
