In my 40 years of working with people all around the world, I have been impressed with many of the individuals I have met who are involved in network marketing. These are passionate individuals, involved in companies with products and services that meet human needs. They are excited about their future prospects and the possibility of having more freedom, both of time and finances. They are individuals who want balance in their lives and are willing to work hard to achieve that balance.

Even more intriguing, everyone who gets involved in network marketing begins on a level playing field. You are not judged by age, background, race, education, or financial condition. And as you help lift others to higher levels, the industry rewards you. It is an inspiring business model, indeed.

As I have visited with and lectured among many from the network marketing industry, I have identified a common thread that appears in most conversations. The questions asked of me generally go something like this:

  1. My success seems to ebb and flow. How can I achieve consistent results?
  2. How do I motivate great performance from my team?
  3. How do I get over not wanting to talk to people? I seem to face rejection all the time.
  4. Theres so much to do, and theres never enough time! How do I keep my relationship strong with my team members and my family, while keeping my sanity?

Challenges like these can be summed up in one great challenge: How do I become a highly effective network marketing professional, instead of just going in circles, wasting time, not making any impact, but hoping for the best?

My experience has taught me that effectiveness is summed up in the 7 Habits of Highly Effective People, and in the fundamental shift in thinking required to live by them. Habits are patterns of behavior composed of three overlapping components: knowledge, attitude, and skill. Because these three components are learned rather than inherited, our habits constitute our second nature, not our first. Thus we can make or break our habits. Habits of effectiveness can be learned, and habits of ineffectiveness unlearned.

To be truly effective in your network marketing business, you need a new level of thinking, based on principles of effective personal management. You need a character-based inside/out approach. Inside/out means to start with yourself first, to start with the most inside part of the self, with your character.

When you receive business building training, much of what is taught are skills and techniques, and these are useful. But what separates the mediocre network marketer from the highly effective one is not just the skills in the head. Effectiveness starts with the heart. If I try to use techniques and tactics to get other people on my team to do what I want, to work better, to be more motivated, to like me and each other, while my character is fundamentally flawed, marked by duplicity and insincerity, then in the long run I cannot be successful. If there is little or no trust, there is no foundation for permanent success. There is simply no substitute for good character.

The real nucleus of each of these 7 habits is a principle. Principles are natural laws. Now this is an extremely important idea. You cant really fake these habits. You have to pay the price. You cant fake any true growth and development. Were dealing with principles, with realities. The key is to align our values, our habits, our behavior, with principles.

Another important word for our discussion here is paradigm. Paradigm simply means a mental image that you have in your mind of the way things are out there. These are the images we carry in our head of reality, and they come from our backgrounds and our own experiences. When you start out in your network marketing business, youre understandably a little insecure or disoriented. It helps to start out with effective paradigms. Even veteran network marketers can benefit from examining their paradigms. If we want to make small changes, we can work on changing our behavior but if we want to make significant quantum changes, we need to work on our basic paradigms.
