TO MY LOVING WIFE, SHERIE
TO MY FATHER AND MOTHER
AND TO MY CLOSE FRIEND HEATHER
ACKNOWLEDGMENTS
I would like to thank my loving, supporting wife for all her support through the hard times, the long nights at the computer, and the thousands of hours Ive spent reading books, watching shows about the ecology, and scouring the Internet in my unrelenting thirst for knowledge about alternative energy sources, especially biodiesel. Thank you for providing that balance in my life that everyone needs. You are a blessing not just to me, but to those who know you or get to share a brief moment with you. Youve inspired many others to overcome their hardships. Youve always supported my decision to write this book and to start a business selling biodiesel equipment.
I also want to thank my father, George, for encouraging me to build our first biodiesel processor, and for inspiring me to learn about something that I now feel tremendous excitement about. Youve patiently stood by me while we learned about biodiesel together, and never got tired of listening to me. I finally found a direction in my life, something that I believe in wholeheartedly, and I thank you for supporting me in my decision.
I want to thank my mother, Barbara, for being a loving, kind person who has always been there for me. It is perhaps she who is most responsible for my having the time to write this book. Thank you for the wonderful memories in our life, for helping to guide me through life, and for all youve done. Im a very lucky person to have two parents who are both so loved by those around them, and especially by me. (Yes, Mom, Ill buy you that new TV now.)
My grateful thanks to my close friend, my confidante, and my other mother, Heather, who has been an amazing friend to me and has helped me so many times that I wouldnt know where to start acknowledging it. Its nice to be such good friends with someone whos your stepmother (but more like a second mother to me) and a best friend.
Special thanks to my business associates, especially Noel, for holding the assembly and shipping operation together under some trying times. Youve all stuck it out the whole time, and I thank you all. Thanks also to John and Pat for your help with the books, payroll, and other business activities. I believe in the saying Do what you love, and the necessary resources will follow. So thank you for your help while I do what I love.
Finally, thanks to my sister, Laura, and brothers, Marty and Zane, and all our friends and family for their support and help in my life. Ive been so involved in my business venture and in writing this book that Ive havent gotten to spend much time with everyone. So thank you for understanding why Guy has been staying home a lot to work on his biodiesel book or the EZBiodiesel website. Dont be surprised to see more of me soon!
PREFACE
Your first questions when considering this book will likely be, Why should I choose this book over the others out there? And What makes the author qualified to write a book about biodiesel? Let me take a minute to answer.
First off, this book is not meant to be a theoretical, definitive, scientific analysis. Instead, its intended as a guide to help the average person learn the basics of what biodiesel is and how to make it at home, as well as a source for some advanced techniques and theories. Ill discuss the benefits and drawbacks of biodiesel along with the environmental and financial reasons that it may be the best alternative fuel available today. (The Introduction will cover these in detail.) While you dont have to be a chemist to make and understand biodiesel, you do have to understand the proper techniques to make high-quality fuel while avoiding problems in the process. Ive written this book with that in mind, and I offer many tips and tricks to make things smoother along the way.
Ive been interested in alternative energy for many years now. The idea of producing energy of some sort from free sources like the sun, water, and windand even from waste products such as used motor oilhas always intrigued me. So when I first heard about biodiesel, and how I could actually make a high-quality diesel fuel at home, out of free waste cooking oil, for less than $1 a gallon, I was hooked.
The idea of making my own fuel really piqued my curiosity. I was getting fed up with rising fuel costs and the greed of the big oil companies. I was especially sick of knowing how much of our money was going to rich foreign oil cartels and how many wars we fight to protect our oil interests abroad. I decided to build my own fuel processor so that I could begin making homemade biodiesel myself. How hard could it be? I asked myself. It wasnt long until I realized I had a lot to learn about the process, the science of it, and other factors.
AUTHOR FILLING UP WITH BIODIESEL
Although my first batch of biodiesel came out more or less OK, I knew I had to delve much more deeply into the subject. So I began reading everything I could to learn all about biodieselfrom sources on the Internet, from the available books and journal articles, and so on. I was intent on learning all I could to make the highest-quality fuel possible. After all, my family and I would be using it in newer vehicles that would be quite costly to repair if we damaged the engine with our homemade fuel. In the course of my study, I read many first-person accounts from others who had engine problems from using low-grade biodiesel. These usually were the result of improper processing procedures, outdated techniques, skipping of important steps, and the like. So I decided to find out how to avoid those problems, profit from others mistakes, and seek out exactly what it took to make clean, reliable biodiesel for myself.
Because the available information was so scattered, and extremely difficult to decipher, I finally decided to tackle writing this book. I realized there wasnt a really good book on the market that would help the average person understand biodiesel and how its made. So I dug in, and spent about a thousand hours reading forums, websites, books, and manuals. It turned out to be quite difficult to weed out the theoretical, unproven techniques from the tried-and-true methods. I wanted to greatly simplify the process for everyone else and compile in one book all the most current, proven, and safe information about making biodiesel. I also wanted to create an easy reference guide, plus a complete index, which would make it easier to find information when needed. Finally, I wanted to pass on all the tips and tricks I learned over the past two years of making biodiesel, saving my readers the frustration of learning them on their ownthe hard way.
In this book youll find a lot of current information (presented in clear, ordinary terms) that you wont find anywhere elsewhat biodiesel is and how its made, important tips and tricks for processing it, lists of items needed for titration, how to do test batches, the best ways of oil collection, and so on. This book will also give you many ideas on how to stay up-to-date with current procedures and information, such as websites to visit and books to read. Much of it is information my colleagues and I learned in the process of making biodiesel ourselves, in manufacturing and selling our own line of EZBiodiesel processors on our website (
