Chapter 1 Understand Music Theorys Role

If you want to achieve musical creativity, you need to learn more about music theory and how you can use it for your benefit. However, note that there are a few misconceptions regarding the real meaning of music theory. Many guitarists shy away from this theory as they believe it is nothing but a set of unbreakable rules that will limit their musical freedom. Others think that music theory was developed for the mere purpose of learning abstract ideas and concepts about the fundamentals of music, but both of these are mistaken beliefs.

Music theory, in actual fact, is designed to connect ones emotions, feelings and thoughts together by way of musical expression. It intends to explain how we can continuously employ musical creativity in recreating our emotions, and why we feel such emotions in the music we listen to in the first place.

Many guitarists play melodies and songs from their favorite guitar players with the hopes of achieving the same level of musical ability in due course. While it is somewhat rewarding to play well-known riffs and solos, you will not gain musical creativity by doing this alone. In fact, copying your favorite musician, or any other musicians in that sense, will produce trifling results and set narrow borders to your own musical capacity.

Basically, there are two things you must learn and understand if you want to become truly creative and expressive in music:

1. You need to delve deep into the songs or solos of great musicians and guitarists to understand the way they think. In other words, you have to determine why they chose those particular notes and ideas in creating those particular songs. It will be impossible for you to learn this if you are simply copying the notes and melodies of your favorite guitar solos and songs.

Instead of attempting to mimic other musicians, spend time deliberating on the emotions you want to convey through music and decide what musical choices are most appropriate to accomplish that goal. Once you get to this extent of musical freedom, you can develop your unique sound and create your own style as they connect to the emotions and ideas coming from your own mind.

*Practice Tip: As a practice when you are learning solos, try to name the emotion associated with it. Go beyond happy, or sad feeling and delve deep into the complexities of the human condition. Is this solo angry, aggressive, melancholy, relaxed, cold, edgy, passionate, sexual, sensual, modest, robotic, enthusiastic? Once you have decided what types of feelings you associate with the song try to play stuff you already know with the same type of feel.

Try taking a scale you already know and playing it in different moods. As Ive expressed before in my first book Guitar Practice: Learn to Play like a Professional, consistency over long periods of time is key. If you have never played music like this it will take some time before it feels natural, but enough effort and time and you will hear/feel the difference.

You can break down the specific emotions of each instrument if you want to understand a song better, you can hear singers angst with passionate instrumental backings. Some songs are obviously more cohesive. When band mate is on the same page performances are powerful.

2. You must learn how to create and express certain musical emotions by making specific musical choices when playing a guitar solo or composing musical pieces. Additionally, you need to learn how to make your listeners understand and feel the exact emotions you want to convey through your music, without saying a single word. A lot of guitarists struggle with this and unfortunately, many are unable to overcome this difficulty completely.

As a result, many musicians are limited to playing only the music of others without ever expressing themselves through their own songs or by playing the guitar. On the other hand, those who accomplished this tough task achieve musical success and prominence and learn how to grow with the music they play consistently.

*Practice Tip: Using the same exercise from before, play some notes or scales with a specific mood in mind. This is where theory comes in, knowing that major scales tend to sound happier while minor scales can sound more sullen. After you have decided on how you want the music to sound record a bit of your session, after some time goes by and play it back to yourself.

Does your recording portray the same feelings that you had while you were recording it? This is a practice in being truly objective. The point here is too see how good you are playing what you feel. It will help you be able to adjust and play what you feel for audiences in the future. Dont be too hard on yourself if it doesnt match at first, its a skill we will be developing.

Skills Learned from Music Theory

Music theory can help us explain how music stirs different emotions within us, and there are various ways to validate this.

The most essential skills you will learn from it include the following.

1. Familiarity with how each note sounds - Music theory makes you capable of putting new musical ideas together without relying solely on your muscle memory to remember how each musical part sounds. When you have the skill to associate specific emotions and feelings with the musical mechanisms needed to convey them, you can compose all sections of your music and organize them accordingly on paper, even before playing the notes.

2. Knowing the right notes to play - Once youve fully understood music theory, you can easily identify exactly what musical element is necessary in conveying your emotions. This will save you plenty of time when finding the right notes to create your own music. Having this ability will put you far ahead of other musicians and guitarists who simply fiddle with their instruments until something that sounds interesting comes up.

3. Understanding of ones emotions in music - Learning music theory helps you understand why you feel certain feelings when listening to any piece of music. You can then apply that knowledge to your own musical approach, so you can start producing music of higher quality.

4. Connecting with your audience - When you know what musical elements can effectively express certain musical emotions, you can anticipate how the audience will interpret your song or music. Through this, you can naturally connect with them and make them feel the exact emotions you want them to feel.
