To my husband, Scott, and my children, Tim, Cara, and Charles, who tolerate my long periods of absence and still remain my ever faithful and enthusiastic cheerleaders, and to all those living with HIV/AIDS, the internally displaced people, and the refugees of Africa who touched my life.
What counts in life is not the mere fact that we have lived. It is what difference we have made to the lives of others that will determine the significance of the life we lead.
Nelson Mandela. Nelson Mandela by Himself: The Authorized Book of Quotations (New York: Macmillan, 2011).
First of all, I would like to thank the many non-governmental organizations (NGOs) which took me on a wild ride with them in so many volunteering missions and allowed me to play a small role in helping my fellow human beings in times of need. In return, the people I came in touch with taught me humility, hope, persistent trust in humanity, and to always count my blessings. Despite the unbelievable hardship, insurmountable problems, inconsolable and heartbreaking tragedies they had been through and still face, they continue to show tremendous courage and resilience in overcoming them and always harboring hopes for a better future. Throughout all these years, I have received more than I have given.
Above all I want to express my deepest thanks to my family who stood by me and gave me their unconditional support when I went off again and again to challenging and perilous places which would worry any loved ones. In my book debut, Lest We Forget: A Doctors Experience with Life and Death during the Ebola Outbreak , I mentioned my son and husband, Charles and Scott FitzGibbon, staying with me during the quarantine, but I failed to remember that both my daughter, Cara Sibelle Lai, and James Sibelle, her dear friend then and now her husband, were there with me as well. I want to apologize to Cara and James who traveled specially from Burlington, Vermont, to welcome me back from my first Ebola volunteering in Liberia in 2014 during my quarantine period. They were not afraid of the possibility of contracting the deadly infection, while the people from the Massachusetts Department of Public Health were cautious and kept their distance from me. They were obviously and understandably worried about my dangerous mission and being there with me when I reached home meant a great deal to me. If I were incubating Ebola, they would be at risk as well, and it would also mean that there would be a danger of them spreading it to their respective school and workplace: The University of Vermont and the Hole in the Wall Gang Camp in Connecticut. The implications could be huge. I was thankful to be home safely.
