Chapter One

Lesson 1 Beginners Genealogy Where ToStart First

Genealogy research always begins withYOU. You are the most important piece of yourfamily tree. So go look in the mirror and say it's me, sayyour name and you have started the first branch on your familytree. You will now work backwards starting with your parents.Your maiden SURNAME is the family you will start researchingfirst or, if you are a man, then your surname will be first.

Let us give as an example: Your maiden name isBetty Ann JONES. You married Alexander Moore SMITH.So your name is Betty Ann JONES-SMITH. Buy some genealogyjournals and title one JONES and color code it. You will beusing these journals with your family's surnames in them foreach family along with other journals for your other family'ssurname. Buy at least 10 genealogy journals to begin with, as youwill be adding SURNAMES, as you get deeper into your genealogyresearch.

Learning Your PATERNAL (Male) Ancestral LineJONES

1. Enter all the information into your journaltitled JONES starting with you and your husband. At thistime you can also title a journal SMITH for your husband'sline. Your husband's bloodline journal will contain all the familygenealogy of the SMITHS' and your JONES bloodlinejournal will contain all the family genealogy of the JONES.Even though you are married there are two separate bloodlines, andthey will come from the male line of each family.

2. You are going to start with your JONESjournal; you will need the following:

Your full name, date of birth, where you wereborn, date of marriage, and any notes of interest you would like toenter about you, your husband and children.

You will need your husband's full name, date ofbirth, where he was born, and any interesting notes about him.Note: this is the first information you will be filling into yourFamily Tree Software later on. I will be giving you instructions onhow to enter this information.

Using your journal titled JONES, startwith you and your husband and enter the same information above foreach.

You will be adding this same type of informationfor each family member that you have, including siblings, Aunts,Uncles, Grandmother, Grandfathers, Great-grandparents and soon.

3. Add your parents and working backwards afteryour parents will come your grandparents. Enter as much informationas you can about each grandparent in your JONES book.

4. Now your father will have the surname ofJONES, so let's give him the name of Leroy Lee JONES,but your mother will have a maiden surname different than yourfather's last name. So let's give your mother's maiden name asWATKINS, Janice Carol WATKINS-JONES. You will nowneed another journal and title it WATKINS. I like to colorcode my journals so that I know by glancing at them, by theircolor, I immediately know which surname I am looking for. I don'thave to guess whose surname it is for that certain journal. Useyour favorite colors and color code each journal. Make the journalsbeautiful and exciting so that they give you pleasure each time youlook at them. You can use beautiful pictures, stickers and etc. togive them a beautiful effect. A good idea would be to put a pictureof the family that the journal is about on the front of thejournal. This gives a unique look and also identifies that journal. As you compile your journals, remember these family ancestryjournals will be passed down for many generations, so make thembeautiful and as complete as you can.
