People who work together will win, whether it be against complex football defenses or the problems of modern society.Vince Lombardi Winning was not the only thing. Something more important than winning football games occurred during the Lombardi Dynasty. Vince Lombardis Green Bay Packers ushered the National Football League to the forefront of American sports popularity during a racially explosive time, proving that teamwork transcended the color barrier. Along the way to greatness, Lombardis team demonstrated to the NFL, to America, what football looked like in the modern era: blacks and whites working together to win. And win they did. The Green Bay Packers can tell one of the greatest sports stories our nation has ever seen: five World Championships, including three in a row. No team has been able to win three straight World titles since the great Packers squads. With 40 years of reflection, how Lombardis Dynasty occurred is much more important than we knew back then. They won championships because of the character of the players. The task was daunting and the results historical. With a collection of competent people, Lombardi pushed, pulled, tugged and led Green Bay-and the NFLinto the modern era. Very little has been written about the defensive side of the ball and because of the attrition of the Packer defensive players from the era, there is very little chance much wil be published. Lombardis Left Side is the firstand most likely the lastbook about the great Green Bay Packers defenses of the Lombardi Era as told by two of Lombardis greatest defensive players: Herb Adderley and Dave Robinson. These two players were critical elements in winning championsips and moving our country forward in a racially explosive time. The two men, who were athletic, bright, courageous, disciplined, hungry, confident, proud, spiritual, descent and black, blazed a trail. They played on the left side of Green Bays great defenses of the Lombardi Era. For the first time, Adderley and Robinson share what it was like to be a professional football player in the 1960s through personal stories of Lombardi and his management of the entire Green Bay Packer organization. Articulate and intelligent, Adderley and Robinson cover it all: on the field and off. These two great athletes shut down the left side of the football field and opened up the right side of our minds.

PRAISE FOR LOMBARDIS LEFT SIDE

A powerful book by two great teammates. Herb Adderley and Dave Robinson remind us that racism was not a part of Lombardis Green Bay. I love both of these guys. We were an exceptional group in a special time and Lombardis Left Side explains it in outstanding fashion.

PAUL HORNUNG

Every person who cares about the men who played in the National Football League should read Lombardis Left Side. This is probably the most insightful and powerful book ever written about the Vince Lombardi Era.

Herb Adderley, Dave Robinson and Royce Boyles have written a classic that is destined to be relevant for years.

Lombardis Left Side is different from any other book about the Green Bay Packers. This is a history lesson and insight into the fairness of Vince Lombardi and his Dynasty. It happened during a chaotic time in America, and my friend Herb Adderley, Dave Robinson and co-author Royce Boyles have captured it beautifully.

BILL COSBY

Herb Adderley is unmistakably one of the greatest to ever put on pads. He was also one of the best teammates I ever had. In the early 1970s, while I was battling injuries and the accompanying demons, Herb was a person who in words and other ways helped me keep my chin up. His passion for and commitment to winning, his compassion for his teammates, and his courage were instrumental for me in overcoming my personal problems. Those things were also instrumental in the 1970 and 1971 Dallas Cowboys going to back-to-back Super Bowls.

I would not expect Herb to co-write a book that was not passionate, provocative and challenging. He has not disappointed.

Just as they played, Herb Adderley and Dave Robinson have written a hard-hitting book. Two great players, who I am proud to call my friends, have produced a great book that tackles some sensitive issues for the first time. Lombardis Left Side will open your eyes to subjects that are nearly unbelievable.

LEM BARNEY

Detroit Lions 196778; Pro Football Hall of Fame 1992

The game of professional football is an interesting dichotomy. It is brutally physical while, at the same time, beautifully graceful. Some of the greats who played this game, our Hall of Fame players, possessed both physicality and grace. Herb Adderley is both physically graceful as well as graceful in spirit. The Hall of Fame cornerback will go down as one of the greatest who ever played his position. He was a shut-down corner who allowed Lombardi to never have to worry about a wide receiver who lined up across from Herb. I have written multiple articles on many blogs concerning the physical and neurological issues that face the NFL Retired Players as well as the despicable lack of support from the Union leadership whose jobs were given on the backs of those who built the league, the players. It was a call to my home one morning, from Herb, a man I had never met, that encouraged me to continue the fight to define who was responsible for the lack of care that some of his great teammates suffered. He cared about his teammates and, in fact, was to do a benefit to help one of his teammates that night. Herb Adderleys courage, as the Class Representative, defied the deceitfulness and the greed of the NFL Players Association leadership. It is not easy standing up for what is right, but I think Herb, who played in a time of racial unrest, applied many lessons learned in his extraordinary life. As a man lucky enough to have played six years in the NFL, I have a great deal of appreciation for the legends who came before me, and no player is held higher than Herbert Anthony Adderley.

TONY DAVIS

NFL Retired

David Robinson and Herb Adderley were the greatest teammates a professional football player could possibly have. I played behind one and beside the other. The book they have written, Lombardis Left Side, is the best publication with the best information I have read about the Lombardi Packers. Like a velvet hammer, this beautifully written book by Dave, Herb and co-author Royce Boyles reveals important issues from an explosive time in our countrys history. I am proud to say I was part of a team that made a difference in a city, a league and a country. Lombardis Left Side tells our story.

TOM BROWN

Green Bay Packers 196468

Everyone is aware of Coach Lombardis wins on the football field and his historical championships; however, I think one of the most impressive qualities of the teams he fielded was his players character and the way in which they approached and played the game. Herb Adderley and Dave Robinson were the ultimate team players and two great examples of the importance of leadership and integrity on a team. Both were outstanding athletes and All-Pro defenders, but they were also men of exceedingly high character who were instrumental in Coach Lombardis teams reaching the highest level of success. Lombardis Left Side tells the story from the perspective of these two players who achieved greatness during one of the more challenging times in our countrys history. Its no coincidence that the championship teams that Ive been fortunate enough to coach had a core group of high character leadership young men just like Herb and Dave. In my experience, its what separates championship teams from the rest. The lessons in this book carry over into our daily lives as we all strive to become champions in our own right.
