T his book has a life of its own. It is the culmination of the work of so many along the way, and I am honored to know them. They all have been essential parts of my life.

Perhaps I could use the word mentor for those who guided me along the way, but the Sanskrit word guru says it all: dispeller of darkness. Those who shed light on this path. My academic guru, the late professor Frederick Dow, was a true mentor and a great source of encouragement to me for developing a negotiation course at US International University. We all have that one teacher who always stood out, the one who lifted us. For some this person is an elementary or high school teacher; mine showed up during graduate school. Dr. Dow was that academic guru for me.
My spiritual guru, Walt Baptiste, showed me the inner light, put me on my spiritual path and taught me balancethe laser sharp edge between strength and softness, materiality and spirituality. And my gratitude to his wife, Magana, for her joyful spirit and her way of always reminding me of my real essence. My heartfelt appreciation to my revered spiritual teacher, Swami Veda Bharati, for his intellectual vigor, wisdom, and gentleness. He was the embodiment of love and showed me the way of the heart. And to the Zen master Kyozan Joshu Roshi for his lifelong teaching and instilling discipline in me with our eighteen hours of meditation day after day.
