Introduction
P articularly in the western world, thetrend is that our lives are going in the direction of a more "green",organic, and eco-friendly way of living. Sustainability is now taken intoconsideration when making decisions for our families.
During the 20th century, there were many different inventions too numerous to mention here. Advancementhas been made in phenomenal ways to make our lives more convenient andefficient. However, along with those advancements have come overuse, misuse, abuse, greed, etc. Basically, it's catching up with us if it hasn't alreadycaught up with us.
The information in this book is aimed atbringing awareness to as many people as possible about how they can play theirrole individually toward a cleaner, eco-friendly environment which in turnbenefits other species that share our planet. It must start with us.
If you take a look at each chapter'stitle, it is extremely broad by design. So despite your age group, there'ssomething everyone can do. In other words, in one way or another we can eachtake personal action to a sustainable way of living.
Some of the topics might be somethingthat you haven't given much thought to or might not even know about. So this isa good way to be informed and broaden your knowledge about green alternativesand other aspects of sustainability.
You've probably noticed other books thatmention saving money or getting rich as a byproduct of going green or living sustainably. That basically comes down to recycling bad-for-the-environment electronicdevices that some companies will actually pay you for, or choosing to buy usedinstead of new, or the use of natural products (for cleaning or gardening)that's abundantly available and more cost effective than a commercial brand ofsomething, or reducing utility expenses through the use of solar energy, etc. These things and so much more are covered in this book including magneticelectricity and hybrid electric vehicles. There's even a chapter for naturalbaby products and as well as sustainable feminine hygiene alternatives.
This is one of those books that you saveand refer back to like a reference guide. For those that have a particularinterest in a specific topic, websites and sources that provide further detailsare cited. After reading through it, not only will you have a keen awarenessabout what is involved with going green, but you might also find yourselfchanging the way you do things for a more sustainable way of life!

Chapter1 - Ecycling - Your Contribution to a Green Environment
W ith all the never ending electronicgadgetry that many of us own, especially in the western world as I like to callit, you can only imagine what it must be doing to the landfills and of courseour environment. This book would not be complete without a chapter on how to doour part when it comes to eCycling and being a responsible user of electronics.
"Withnewer, more hi-tech electronics continuously becoming available to fit our lifestyles,we are replacing older models at rapid rates with no signs of slowing down. Asa result, electronics are becoming one the fastest growing portions ofAmericas trash." - Environmental Protection Agency
There will be numerous references touseful programs, organizations and related products that will help you to playyour role in such an important responsibility. Many practical tips will beshared that makes it easy to go green with your electronic devices and keepmoney in your pocket.
What is eCycling?
The term "eCycling" is veryappropriate for the 21st century lifestyle (and the latter 20th century too)."E" stands for electronics and when you think of "cycling"what comes to mind is a circle, recycling, reusable; not leaving the loop. So eCyclingmeans to recycle your old or unused electronic waste instead of throwing itaway, thus contributing toxic waste in landfills.
You may be tempted to throw that oldvideo game system, broken computer, and printer cartridges into the garbagecan. But before you conveniently do that, consider this: The world generates 20 50 tons of e-waste every year and only 11.4% of that is recovered forrecycling. That's astounding!
Sources that PAY YOU for recycling usedelectronics - Thereare people and companies out there that will pay you for recycling usedelectronics such as phones, computers, cameras, calculators, mp3 players, printers, video game systems, TVs, and more. You can get cash (or store credit)for it all. It should be noted that how much cash you get will depend on hownew the item is and the condition its in. Sites worth checking out include: BuyMyTronics.com, FlipSwap.com,Gazelle.com, and NextWorth.com. There's also EcoATM.com/ which specifically accepts usedcell phones, iPods and MP3 players. They will ascertain the value and give youa gift card or in-store trade up. You can trade items for free at FreeCycle.org.
