While all the information in this book has been checked by experts in the relevant subject areas, including doctors and other health practitioners, it should not be considered medical advice, which you should obtain from your own practitioner. Health practitioners differ in their opinions of how medical situations should be handled. Obstetrics and pediatrics are fields that continue to evolve. Indeed, even the official medical advisement of the American Academy of Pediatrics are regularly updated as new information becomes available.

THE Series
Dear Reader,
When I was first asked to write The Everything Baby's First Year Book, I was initially hesitant. I had a huge library of first year books sitting on my shelf but instead of referring to them when I was struggling with various dilemmas during my children's first years, I called other moms for their advice.
I turned to them because these moms, who were going through first years of their own, had sometimes figured out things that weren't in any of the books. I turned to them because they didn't preach, or tell me their way was the only way. Instead they said, Well, I tried this, and this, and finally this, which seemed to work. I turned to them because the month-by-month guides didn't help when I had an urgent question and no idea in what month I was supposed to have that question.
I hope that as you're going through your children's first years, you have friends like I did to share your stories with. But you can never have too many friends, which is why I wrote this book. In it, along with the practical, up-to-date information you'll need during your baby's first year, are real moms and their experiences.
I've assembled this information in a format I hope you'll find interesting, useful, and, sometimes, funny. Because, along with being challenging, exhausting, baffling, and amazing, this first year is supposed to be fun, too. After all, isn't that part of the reason we all had babies?
Sincerely,
For my mother, Helena Barna Perry, who was there to help whenever I needed her during my three first years.
