Katherine "Kay" McKeever, 16 October 1924 to 4 April 2019
This edition is dedicated to Kay McKeever, whose vision of owl enclosures was
before her time as she created housing environments that were outside the box
(or the cage!) and spent countless hours monitoring behavior remotely through
closed-circuit cameras. Her observations and ingenuity led to great improve-
ments in the welfare of raptorsand subsequently other speciesin captivity.

I am so very grateful and encouraged to see so many new and
eager rehabilitators and veterinarians with so much talent
and desire to help wildlife; I am convinced the best is yet to
come. In the face of so many challenges to the environment
and wildlife populations, the innovations and improvements
in care for individuals are becoming ever more crucial.
There is so very much to do.
Please learn all you can from every animal that comes your way:
keep their welfare in mind at every step and realize that euthanasia
does not equate to failure; use natural history as your guide, as
well as the knowledge, experience, and mentorship of those whove
learned from their mistakes; and, keep moving toward the best
practices possiblethese will change over time, so keep up!
Above all, take care of yourself physically, emotionally,
and mentally so you can best take care of wildlife that
comes your way. They are depending on you.
Thank you for all that you do on the behalf of wildlife.
