AMY HERZOGS ULTIMATE SWEATER BOOK
As a teenager, I spent hours in secondhand stores
looking for unusual pieces I could afford on my mea-
ger budget. When I got my first real job, I used the
bounty of regular paychecks to invest in pieces I still
love more than twenty years later. And when I picked
up knitting again in my mid-twenties, my heart went
immediately to sweaters.
Since then, Ive knit hundreds of garments and
helped thousands of knitters make clothes they love
to wear. My previous books (
Knit to Flatter
,
Knit Wear
Love
, and
You Can Knit That
) have all touched on
different aspects of helping you move your sweater
knitting beyond what a great project territory, and
into the promised land of this is my favorite top! Its
my passion, and the reason I do what I do.
But those books, as much as knitters have loved
them, left a gap. They were each focused on specific
aspects of sweater knitting: Here are the lines cloth-
ing can paint on your body; heres how to use yarn
you love to make something that will fit into your
closet, style-wise; heres how to make sweaters a lit-
tle easier than you thought. And once youve gotten
over the hurdle of your first fantastic sweater, your
mind explodes with the possibilities! You dont need
a single step-by-step walkthrough for your garments
anymore. Youve mostly got a handle on what you like
and how to get itwith the exception of whatever
burning design question you have at the moment.
I love that cardigan I made last month, but I
think now I want one with pockets. How do I
make pockets, again?
My latest fuzzy pullover has a great fit, but
now I want one thats A-line and longer, and
made out of a lighter-weight yarn. How do I
make an A-line, again?
Ive just seen the most amazing sweater in a
store, except I want to make it out of something
with silk in it and add this great lace I used to
make a scarf last year. How do I do that?
In other words, once youve fully embraced the
sweater, you need a reference guide . One thats
INTRODUCTION
Clothes have been a passion of mine for as long as I can remember. As a child,
I sketched endlessly, and then spent hours spelunking in my grandmothers sewing
room for fabric scraps to turn those sketches into clothes for my dolls.
(There were a lot of rues involved.)

INTRODUCTION
written in clear terms, with an index, so you can
quickly look up this months burning sweater ques-
tion and get knitting.
My
Ultimate Sweater Book
is that reference guide.
My goal is the same as everto help you create gar-
ments that are the best clothes youve ever worn.
But in these pages, I start with the premise that you
already
know
what you
want
to wear and just need
a little help making it a reality. Ill give you the same
clear, gentle, and straight-up-honest advice of my
previous books, never fear! But instead of weaving it
all through a single theme or narrative, Ive broken it
up by sweater topic so you can easily dive in, get the
information you need, and get out again. I want you
to spend more time knitting.
I start out in 107) with all the basic
information youll need to draft your own sweater pat-
tern from scratch. From measurement, to swatching
to sweater construction basics () to detailed
guidance on the four major sweater constructions
(), youll be ready to make a great,
basic garment with any yarn you might have. (And
if drafting your own pattern doesnt sound awesome
to you, no worries! Ive included basic cardigan and
pullover patterns in each of these chaptersin twelve
sizes, and three gauges.)
Once youve got a starting point, changing up the
fit or shape of a garment is a great way to make it your
own. In 121), I offer guidance on fit
and silhouette adjustmentseither for a pattern youre
writing or one youve purchased. I go through the basic
shapes of sweater bodies, sleeves, and necklinesand
how to draft or modify them. Along the way, I guide
you through the
whys
as well as the hows. Want to
change up (or draft from scratch) the body of your
sweater, or the sleeves, or the neckline? Learn what
adjustments you might need to make for a larger bust,
or how to lengthen something? Ive got you covered.
In 147), I get to the fun part
of design: embellishments. Learn how your yarns
construction and fiber mix affect your hand-knit
fabric () and how to incorporate stitch
patterns into your sweaters. Ill give you options for
every sweater you knit, from edge shaping (chap-
ter 11) to buttonholes (), and everything in
between. Whenever youre ready to move beyond a
basic, youll turn to this section.
And, of course, Ive included garments to help
guide your path. Twenty in all, they cover all the
constructions, adjustments, and embellishments I
describe in the rest of the book. But theyre more
than just technical exercises: From stylishly boxy
() to
elegantly shaped (), the sweaters in these
pages are truly ones you (or your loved ones) will
love wearing every day.
