Preface
A pessimist sees the difficulty in every opportunity; an optimist sees opportunity in every difficulty.
WINSTON CHURCHILL
The coronavirus pandemic has awakened the whole world to the freedom and magic of the work-from-home environment, which has blessed my family and me for nearly two decades.
My wife, Cheri, and I sold the first two businesses we started and decided to move to an island off the Gulf Coast. I had been migrating my investment advisory practice to the Internet for a while and believed I could use Internet tools to work from a home office. The island was ninety miles from my former office, so it would require a change of day-to-day practices to make the transition. I switched from paper to digital reports and files, outsourced administration, and introduced video conferencing. I not only made the transition work but grew the business ten times while working from home under a patio umbrella.
A typical day started by putting on a ball cap to keep the sun out of my eyes while I was looking at the laptop screen, filling a mug of coffee, propping my feet up on the railing of the deck, and watching the boats exit the marina as I fired up the computer to begin my workday. Cheri might bring me a coffee refill, or I might jump in the pool for a couple of laps between teleconferences.
Eventually my company merged with our professional services outsourcer, Dynamic Advisor Solutions. Today Dynamic provides professional services to dozens of advisory practices around the United States and has billions in assets under administration, all from a 100 percent cloud-based platform. (To learn more about the cloud, see the Glossary at the end of this book.) Our entire staff works remotely from locations on three continents.
Working remotely has not only facilitated the healthy growth of our business, it has enabled our employees to reclaim the time that was wasted on commuting, allowed them to spend that time with their families, and provided the flexibility for them to pursue personal and professional growth. In fact, 52 percent of small businesses in America are home-based. A cloud-based virtual environment and platform, combined with a remote workforce, has fueled such incredible cost and operational efficiency that Dynamic now serves as a cutting-edge model for wealth advice in the twenty-first century.
One of the true differentiating factors in this book is the unique approach I take in the previously undefined theological and philosophical model of Biblenomics. This concept is interwoven throughout the chapters, principles, and illustrations Ill be presenting. Biblenomics is a conceptual part of the Eternal Decree, which is based on Ephesians 1:11: In Him also we have obtained an inheritance, being predestined according to the purpose of Him who works all things according to the counsel of His will. The Eternal Decree says that God controls all events in His creation. Biblenomics is also an applied philosophy that has guided me throughout my ministry and successful business endeavors.
Biblenomics is Gods system of economics. It forms the bedrock ideology of success embedded in this work, not by me, but by the Author of life and stewardship. I believe that the Reformation is the foundation of Western civilization, which, with its free markets, property rights, and sanctity of contract, is a direct expression of Gods plan for us through the societies born from the Reformation. The twenty-first-century system of trade, economics, and business is the practical testimony of Gods plan for man, the fruit of the Reformers and Puritans work ethic and moral absolutes. In the pursuit of financial security for our family through our business, we bring empathy into our community and into our neighbors lives. Thereby the invisible hand of God is seen by all, superintending the most prosperous global economy in the history of mankind, just as Adam Smith predicted in his 1776 book The Wealth of Nations.
Biblenomics is more than random principles or lessons taken from isolated Bible stories, verses, or proof texts. It is Gods expression of Himself and His purpose for mankind, found in the holistic way He teaches us to steward our earthly wealth, possessions, and family.
Jesuss teachings show us, with childlike simplicity, how to live out divine love in our workaday lives through our words, actions, tools, and earthly possessions. In the twenty-first century, money is the proxy for all these earthly possessions. Our handling of money, work, and business is where the rubber meets the road when it comes to living our life the way that God intended.
My dear friends, this is the ridiculously simple path to the beautiful life for which we all long: to live our life honoring God, loving others completely and selflessly, and letting our business be an expression of that beautiful life.
Biblenomics recognizes Gods decree, which outlines His plan and purpose for the world and for us individually. It acknowledges that everything that happens in the world and in our lives has a purpose, even though we dont know what it may be ahead of time, and that under this grand purpose of sovereign God we can live a life coram Deo (a Latin phrase meaning in the presence of God). We live a life of wholeness under the superintending hand and authority of God, all to His honor. In no clearer way is this expressed than when you wake up Monday morning and execute your business plan according to the principles of Biblenomics under the superintending providence of the invisible hand of God.
