A brief History of theGerman shepherd
German shepherd dog alsocommonly known as Alsatian did not look like what it is today; itlooked like a common mongrel having coarse coat and a short tail. However, its origin can be traced to the end of 19th century. It isan intelligent, agile, loyal and self-confident dog; it is fearlessbut not hostile and its quite sociable.
In the late 1800s with themodernization of transportation and communication a trend towardsselective breeding started and records began to be kept.
The motive was to breed adog which could work well under any condition. The making of Germanshepherd is known to have begun at a dog show when Captain Max vonStephanitz spotted a dog of the primal canine type who had allqualities of endurance, suppleness, intelligence, steadiness andstrength.
It was a workingsheepherder born with all the above mentioned qualities andabsolutely needed no training. Its name was Hektor Linksrhein; thecaptain was quick to buy it and renamed it Horand von Grafath, thefirst registered German Shepherd Dog.
Von Stephanitz founded theVerein fur Deutsche Schferhunde, SV or the German Shepherd Dog clubto keep a tight watch on the breeding.
The captain's main aim wasto develop a dog with "Utility and Intelligence." He maintainedthat beauty was secondary and a dog was useless to his master if itdid not have soundness, intelligence and structural efficiency tomake him a good servant. He then developed a breed standard whichoutlined all the required features.
Initially he extensivelydid inbreeding on Horand and his brother Luchs so that thequalities became permanent in the bloodline and later on bred withother unrelated blood of herding origin to prevent defective offsprings.
As Germany started becomingmore industrialized, Stephanitz realized that he would have toemploy the dogs in some other area to keep the breedalive.
As a result of his efforts, the dog served during both the world wars as supply carriers, watchdogs and for tracking.
After successfully servingin the wars, the breed developed quite a name for itself because ofstories told by army men of all countries. Some were also taken toAmerica where as a result of cross breeding, a different groupevolved. However, in the United States it is among the top fivepopular dogs.
The breed is known to havecertain diseases as a result of inbreeding in its early life;however, it has an average life span of 7-10 years.
Cross breeding over theyears has resulted in the Modern German shepherd dog of today whichhas the combination of beauty, intelligence, strength, fun lovingnature and the most loyal among various breeds.
You need to note that theirpopularity has increased since they are very smart animals. Thisintelligence allows them to learn complicated commands and processinformation better than other large-breed dogs. As a result, theyseem to enjoy learning tricks that other dog breeds won't or cantlearn.
Moreover, they are veryactive dogs as they enjoy running, playing fetch and chasing ballswith their owners. This characteristic makes them an ideal dog foractive families who enjoy playing with their dogs.
