ACKNOWLEDGMENTS
No writer of nonfiction publishes anything worth reading without some assistance, and I am no exception to the rule. I owe much to many. Glenn Sapir, peerless editor and great friend, thanks for bringing Peter Burford and me together. Peter, thanks for taking a chance on me.
Government biologists, fishing guides, and charter captains have always been a great help in my career, and the preparation of this book on fishing in the Finger Lakes is a prime example. Hats off to Frank and Melody Tennity, Jim Morgan and his first mate Wolfie, Dick Withey, Randy Yager, Craig Nels, Chris Rockwell, Paul Lane, Ron Boyce, Mike Pikulinski, and Mike Jr. Kudos also to Dave Lemon, Emily Zollweg-Horan, Jim Everard, Jeff Robins, Dan Bishop, Web Pearsall, Linda Vera, Pete Austerman, Matt Sanderson, Brad Hammers, and grand DEC retirees Wayne Masters, Bill Abraham, and Les Wedge.
It feels right to thank those who came before me as authors on the subject of Finger Lakes fishing. I admire them all: my late buddy C. Scott Sampson, John Sander, the late Todd Swainbank, and the legendary Earl Maverick Holdren.
Finally, before this starts to read like an Oscars acceptance speech, I extend my gratitude to fishing buddies who have helped me get better acquainted with the Finger Lakes and nearby waters. Among them, thanks to Kid Corbett, Mike Brilbeck, Paul McNeilly, Rich Fallon, Gus Aull, Bruce Douglas, Spider Rybaak, Fred Neff, Jim Sollecito, Mark Gonzalez, Tom Scoda, Wayne Brewer, Wilfred Bud Eberlin, Mike DeTomaso, and my son, Sean.
INTRODUCTION: HANDPRINTS OF THE GREAT SPIRIT
My late friend Dan Skinner, whose life was cut short by leukemia, loved to laugh, and did so often even in his last days. One hot summer afternoon, when he pedaled his bicycle over 7 miles of moderately steep local roads from Marcellus to Skaneateles, he took a break to gaze at Skaneateles Lake and let a southerly breeze cool his sweaty brow. He was watching a fishing boat trace a trolling route across the sun-splashed surface when a stranger approached.
