One hot summer afternoon, when he pedaled his bicycle over 7 miles of moderately steep local roads from Marcellus to Skaneateles, he took a break to gaze at Skaneateles Lake and let a southerly breeze cool his sweaty brow. He was watching a fishing boat trace a trolling route across the sun-splashed surface when a stranger approached.
