    Table of Contents
    Introduction

B eekeeping is an important hobby because it not only provides you with some delicious honey that you can either use or sell, but it also helps to keep the environment safe. Many plants rely on honey bees to help them get the nutrition they need and to stay healthy. While we get to enjoy the sweet honey, the plants and flowers around us get to enjoy all the hard work of the bees as well.

Unfortunately, the amount of beekeepers has gone down in the last few decades. With many people moving to the cities and little space to keep these bees, it is not as common to find these beehives all around. But it is still a great hobby to consider if you are looking to make some extra money or would like to just have fresh honey around when you want it the most.

If you are interested in getting into beekeeping, this guidebook is going to give you all the information that you need to get started. We will talk about some of the basics of beekeeping to get you started, how to pick out the supplies that are needed, the basics of getting your beehive started such as where to put it, some tips for getting the honey out of your beehive at the end of the season and some of the common issues that you may face when running your own beehive. All of this is valuable to the beginner beekeeper who wants to ensure that the hive and their bees stay as healthy as possible.

Beekeeping is not a difficult hobby to learn. In fact, once you get your hive and your supplies all set up and introduce the bees, you get to sit back and let them do their work until the honey is ready. Whether you are just getting started with the idea of beekeeping or you are ready to dive right in, this is the best hobby for you to consider. Make sure to read through this guidebook and learn everything that you need to know about getting started with beekeeping.

Chapter 1: Getting Started with Beekeeping

B eekeeping can be a very rewarding experience. Some people find it is a great hobby for them to enjoy to get outside in nature, have some fun, and learn something new. Others take it as a more serious endeavor in order to make money from the honey or as a learning activity in homeschooling. No matter what your reason for getting into beekeeping, it can be an enjoyable experience for everyone.

The good news is that basic beekeeping isnt going to require a lot of time or space, and you wont need a lot of money in order to get started. And as long as flowers can bloom in your area, you can keep bees in that area. For a little bit of work, you are going to get some delicious honey that you can place on your toast, in your tea, or to keep around for any time that you need something a little bit sweet.

Hobby beekeepers have been declining in our country. It is estimated that there are only 100,000 hobby beekeepers right now in the United States, down from 200,000 just a few years ago. This means that it is the perfect time to get back into this hobby so that you can learn how beekeeping goes and start to bring these numbers up. It is believed that urbanization is the biggest issue with the decline, as well as parasitic mites that increase costs and decrease production.

Some people may be worried about the costs and feel that they will get stung or have other problems, but in reality, you just need a few hives in order to get tons of extra honey each year. You dont need to have a big hive, or spend hours on the hives; you just need to have a few and you are set. Lets take a look at some of the basics that you should learn if you are interested in keeping bees in your home.

    Why Keep Bees?

I f you take care of your bees, you could have a relatively small hive and get from 30 to 100 pounds of honey in each season, depending on which part of the country you live. This means that you can put in a little bit of work and have enough honey for your whole family to store throughout the year. Many people have too much and find that selling the honey is a great way to make a supplemental income.

For those who are interested in helping improve wildlife and keep the natural order of things, beekeeping will help you to keep the population from declining more than before. You will need to protect against parasites and diseases, but outside of that you are helping to increase the bee population while getting all of the great honey benefits.

Your gardening can improve as well. Since so many bees have been killed off from parasites and diseases, it is no wonder that your garden is suffering, It needs the help from bees to grow big and strong, and if the bees arent present, you are going to have trouble growing the great garden that you want.

How Many Hives Should I Have?

A s a beginner, you will want to start out with a smaller amount of hives so that you can gain experience and find out if this is the right hobby for you. If you really enjoy doing this process, you can always increase the amount of hives that you have later on and do more. Remember that even out of just two or three hives, you can get a lot of honey so dont feel like you need to take on a lot in order to get just enough honey to help your family. It is recommended that most beginners start with between two and four hives and then work up from there.

Having at least two is a good idea if one of the hives has some issues. An example of this is if one of the hives makes a lot of extra honey but the other one is struggling to get enough honey to take care and feed themselves. You can take the honey from one hive and give it to the other one to help them survive if needed. If you go above four hives as a beginner, you may find that it is overwhelming.

In some cases, if you have enough room and it is allowed in the area where you live, you may want to consider growing your beehive collection as the years go by. Some of those who live out in the country enjoy having a larger group of beehives to help make more honey and use this as a side job. This can be a great hobby or second income that you want, but you need to just start with a few hives in the beginning to ensure that you learn the process and that you dont take on more work than you can handle.

    What Equipment Will I Need?

W hen you get started, there are a few pieces of equipment that you will need. You will first need a bee suit, which is basically a white coverall that has elastics that will help to close the cuffs at the pant legs and at the sleeves. You also should have some gloves to protect your hands and a veil that is a hat with a screen mesh so that the bees are not able to get to your face.

The good news is that these are pretty easy to find. Some people do make their own at home, but it is often best to pick one from a supply store to ensure that you are getting one that will really protect you from getting stung. There are a variety of prices, colors, and other options that you can choose based on your needs.

You may also want to consider keeping around some pest control and other medications that are going to help you in case there are issues with pests or with different diseases within the bees during the winter and other months. These pests can cause some issues within your beehive and you will either lose the honey or the colony that you are taking care of without the right precautions.

What Parts Should I Know About a Beehive?

T here are several different parts of a beehive and knowing all the parts can make the beekeeping process a bit easier. The beehive is going to consist of the foundation, frames, bottom board, covers, and supers. Lets start with the supers. These supers are also called the hive bodies and they are wooden boxes that dont have a bottom or a top, and they are going to be stocked on a bottom board in order to create the hive. A flat wood piece is going to be the inner cover that will help to close it up and the outer cover is going to help to keep it tight.
