As someone who has lived with type 1 diabetes for over 15 years, I know that things changed when I stopped thinking of sugar levels as random and unpredictable, and instead as a very logical physiological process in the human body. Thriving with Diabetes shows that diabetes management is not random, and with enough knowledge and patience, balancing blood sugar levels can become far less frustrating and far more predictable.

Preface
Tune In to Your Self

You cant tell that someone has diabetes by looking at him or her. Over the decades, I have confronted the enormous challenge of helping people succeed with this invisible condition.

Diabetes and its complications engulf peoples lives, frequently impacts their families, and sometimes causes death. I have come to question whether we providers are doing everything possible to prevent these loses.

Early in my career, I worked on a team that created a computer program to predict blood sugars. But there are so many things that cause blood sugars to change that the computer ground to a halt. We were never able to predict blood sugars more than 90 minutes in advance. I felt like I had failed.

Over the years, however, I noticed that many people succeed in managing their diabetes. They dont just live with their diabetes; they thrive with it. I began to look for patterns. What led one to succeed and others to fail? Those who overcame the challenges had different diets, levels of physical activity, and personalities.

Yet, there were critical things that they all had in common. Each had found a personal approach that worked, even though the same approach might have been a total failure for someone else. They found ways to manage their diabetes more intuitively, to minimize its impact on their lives. When life got bumpy, they knew how to recover quickly. By making their diabetes more predictable, they were able to see into the future in a way that my computer program never could.
