Barbara Clayton is a freelance quilt and craft designer. For 17 years her work has been published in such magazines as
Quilt World, McCalls Needlework& Crafts, Victoria, Stitch N Sew Quilts, Country Needlecrafts, Doll World and more. She has a Bachelor of Arts degree from Brigham Young University where she majored in art and minored in clothing and textiles. She has also illustrated the childrens book,
Willy Whiskers, by Beverly Labrum. Born in Florida to a military family, Barbara moved frequently across the United States and Germany.

Cutting Cut five 9" 9" A squares cream tonal; fold each square on horizontal and vertical sides, and crease to mark centers.
Cut three 2" by fabric width strips tan marbled; subcut strips into (40) 2" B squares. Cut two 2" by fabric width strips red check; subcut strips into (24) 2" C squares. Cut one 2" strip along the length of the blue tonal; subcut strip into (16) 2" D squares. Cut two 9" by fabric width strips blue crackled; subcut strips into (24) 2" E strips. Cut two 2" 36" F strips and two 2" 39" G strips red check. Cut two 2" 39" H strips and two 2" 44" I strips along the length of the blue tonal.
Cut five 3" by fabric width strips blue crackled; subcut strips into (60) 3" J squares. Cut three 3" by fabric width strips each red check (K) and red mottled (L); subcut strips into (30) 3" squares each fabric. Cutting & Preparing Appliqu Pieces Prepare templates for appliqu shapes using patterns given. Note:Patterns are given in reverse for freezer-paper appliqu. Trace the appliqu shapes onto the paper side of the freezer paper referring to patterns for number to cut; cut out shapes on traced lines. Press the coated side of the freezer-paper pieces onto the wrong side of fabrics as directed on patterns for color, leaving " between pieces. Cut out fabric shapes around freezer-paper patterns, leaving a " seam allowance all around each piece.
Clip all points and curves. Carefully fold the seam allowances over the edge of the freezer-paper pieces and glue in place using the water-soluble glue stick. Note:Trim seam allowance on eye pieces to " to reduce bulk.Completing Rocking Horse Blocks Cut five each 1" and 1" pieces "-wide blue ribbon. Arrange the ribbon pieces as bridle pieces on the horses heads; hand- or machine-stitch in place, turning under the mouth end of the long pieces and both ends of the short pieces. Add eye pieces to horses heads; stitch in place. Referring to marked center on the rocking horse motif, center and pin a motif on an A square in numerical order using creased lines as guides for centering.
Hand-stitch pieces in place using matching all-purpose thread, or machine-stitch in place using clear nylon monofilament. Cut the background fabric away from behind each appliqu shape to within " of the edge of the shapes. Wet the sponge and lay it on the freezer-paper backing to dampen. Move on to the next block while waiting for the glue to loosen. Carefully pull the freezer-paper patterns away. Completing 16-Patch BlocksNote: Press seams in direction of arrows as shown in figure drawings. To complete one block, join two each B and C squares to make a row referring to Figure 1; press. Figure 1 Join two B squares with one each C and D squares to make a row referring to Figure 2; press. Figure 2 Join two C squares with one each B and D squares to make a row referring to Figure 3; press. Figure 3 Join two D squares with one each B and C squares to make a row referring to Figure 4; press. Figure 4 Arrange rows as shown in Figure 5; join to complete one block. Press seams in one direction; repeat for four blocks. Figure 5Completing the Top Join two Rocking Horse blocks with one 16-Patch block and four E strips to make a block row as shown in Figure 6; repeat for two rows. Press seams toward E strips.
