Debbie Shore: about me
When I think back to my childhood I remember
sewing always being a part of it. My mum was
a seamstress and had a sewing room with
cupboards full of wonderful fabrics, old biscuit
tins full of buttons and threads, and drawers
full of ribbons and lace. Shed encourage me to
make dolls clothes and then dolls, before moving
on to making clothes for myself. An enthusiastic
fan of upcycling, mum taught me how to repair
and alter my growing wardrobe by darning socks,
shortening skirts (this was the Sixties after all!)
and making the ared legs of my jeans even
wider by adding triangular ashes of paisley
fabric to the side seams.
Throughout an extensive career in television,
as both a presenter and actor, sewing was and
still is my relaxation, although nowadays its my
profession as well! Im designing products and
patterns to make your sewing life easier, and fun,
quality fabrics for you to work with.
I am so proud to have been voted Sewing
Designer of the Year in the Immediate Media
British Craft Awards 2017, and for the awards
my books have achieved I dont think even
my mum could have guessed how valuable
those lessons in home sewing
Sixties-style would prove to be!

As this book is about all that is vintage
and nostalgic Ive been thinking about
the family members whose creativity I
have been inuenced by. My Grandma
and her little knitted teddies, which I
still have (see below); my Mum with her
sewing, tatting (see below) and beautiful
poetry; her sister, just Auntie, was an
amazing artist; my Dad, whose skills in
mechanics taught me to gure out how
things are made; and nally my sister
Amanda, who is talented in all of the
above! We have a whole new generation
of grandsons and granddaughters
between us now, and I fully intend to
pass on all of these skills!

Natural fabrics like cotton and linen, embroidery and lace,
silk ribbons and buttons made from shells are some of the
things that remind me of my childhood delving into the
dressing-up box that was kept in the attic, over
owing
with fabrics, scarves and too-big-for-me shoes that made
me feel very grand!
For the projects in this book Ive tried to recreate
those nostalgic times but with a modern twist. Ive used
vintage-inspired fabrics and lace to create purposeful or
decorative items for the home including projects perfect
for an afternoon tea such as a tea cosy (see ), a
cake frill (see ) and a beautiful made-to-measure
tray mat (see ). Ive also included plenty of other
items that youll want to keep for yourself or give as gifts
for example, a sweet clutch bag made from doilies (see
). Finally,
there are a few items that will make for a fantastically
vintage Christmas: a stocking (see ), a wreath
(see ). Use
a in (5mm) seam allowance unless otherwise stated.
Auction websites and charity shops are a good
resource for real vintage lace doilies, beads and buttons,
and many modern fabrics have a vintage look to them.
