This book is dedicated to
Sally Brickman and Paul Pearlman:
Thank you from the bottom
of our hearts for teaching us about love.
Like the stars over dark fields,
love is the gift of eternal forces.
We do not know why it appears;
it is just the song the universe
sings to itself.
Zen master John Tarrant
A human being has a one in 600,000 chance of being hit by lightning. The odds are against it, but that means absolutely nothing if youre the person whos struck. This book is filled with true stories about people who got hit by something just as intense and as rare as lightning. Its called love.
Thats what happened to Jessica and Sam. So please suspend disbelief, because what youre about to read actually happenedthe words are exact, and nothing has been embellished for the purposes of making up an even better yarn. People forget that truth is often stranger than fiction and that real stories can be richer than fantasy. But thats jumping ahead. For now, just trust completely in love for a couple minutes (or a bit longer if youre either skeptical or a slow reader).
Come on along for the ride.
Flight of Fancy
They met at dusk, which is probably the only time something beautiful could happen at an airport. All it took was a man, a woman, and spacethe scary part was bridging the gap. In this case, it was a distance of about 20 feet, and she refused to perform the old shy, glance-past-each-other dance. Instead, she looked directly at him, and what followed could only be described as magic.
She was the bolder of the two, which explains why a rational woman 33 years of age would invade a total strangers personal space. (Of course, the 38-year-old mans broad shoulders; dark, curly hair; and warm eyes were also greatly to blame.) Maybe his eyes gave her silent permission to keep walking toward him until just inches separated their faces. Thats when she took a deep breath and gave him a hug.
Hello, Im home, Jessica announced with all the bravado she could muster. Inside, she was thinking, This is absolutely insane, but its the only thing I can say to this man because he looks like home to me. Win or lose, she had to say those exact words because they were trueand sometimes the truth is all you have.
Life is a series of tiny moments. Sam could have jolted back in shock, walked past Jessica, or even called for airport security. But he didnt. Instead, he felt an immediate connection. Its good to have you home, he said, not skipping a beat. He didnt quite know where those words came fromhe simply knew that he had to say them because his entire being felt them.
What started as an unlikely greeting between strangers in a strange land moved on to the stages of modern courtship, including e-mails and late-night phone calls that lasted until dawn. It wasnt long before Sam and Jessica knew that life would be unbearable unless they could be together. So she packed her bags and moved from Boston to Chicago to live with the soul mate shed searched for all her life. People who met them, even the ones who didnt believe in love at first sight, couldnt deny it: These two were living the dream.
