Chapter 1: Introduction to the Bonsai

T here are many different types of growing and gardening that you are able to work with, but the one that is considered a great art form is the bonsai. The ancient art form of bonsai comes from the Japanese and is basically the growing of small trees. You can choose to grow these miniature trees either in some pots indoors or grown outdoors. These trees are around completely to be a decorative piece, and there is a lot of care that is taken by their owners because they will take a lot of work to make the small trees perfect. There are a few different techniques that will be used in order to help keep the trees small rather than letting them grow as big as regular trees.

Bonsai growing is going to be so much different compared to some of the other types of gardening that you are used to doing. While most gardening books are going to talk about some of the best ways to grow fruits, vegetables, herbs, and other things that can be used as food and medicine, the bonsai tree is completely different. It is basically a tiny tree that you are able to grow inside of your home, one that you can keep inside of a pot and even prune to look a particular way. You dont keep this tree in order to have food or medicine, it is used to help with the decoration of your home or to be given away as a gift.

The idea of the bonsai tree is fairly new in the Western world, but despite this, there quite a few varieties of this type of tree that actually do pretty well in the Western world. You can choose the type that seems the easiest to work with in your area or the one that has the look that you want to work with in your home. Most beginners are going to choose to just work with one or two of the bonsai trees because they do take some time to get used to and arent necessarily as easy as some of the other plants that you can choose. But once you get some experience with working on the bonsai tree, you are going to realize how much fun these trees can be, and you may decide to make this a permanent hobby to enjoy.

While the practice of bonsai is often something that is just done in Japan, it was actually something that originated in China around 700 AD. The Chinese original called this process pun-sai and it was something that the elite of the day would practice. These trees, once they were all grown, were then given out as gifts and were often revered.

Then during the period that is known as Kamuka in Japan, which was around 1200 AD, that this practice started showing up in Japan. The Japanese soon came into contact with people working with bonsai when they made their diplomatic missions to China, as well as the trips that their Buddhist students made between the mainland and the Japan. It was during this time that the Japanese were able to take over the art of pun-sai and they renamed it bonsai.

Although there were many times when Westerners were able to come across this spectacular tree during their visits to China and then to Japan, it took a long time before they started to practice this art form on their own in the first place. In fact, the first recorded time that a bonsai was grown in the Western world wasnt until 1902 in France. It took another 50 years before a book on this subject was released in English, so it took a very long time before this information was spread around.

    The Bonsai Family

O ne unique thing about the bonsai tree is that there are so many different species, almost 130 right now, so picking out the one that you would like to use can be a bit daunting. As a beginner in this new art form, picking the right tree to start with will make a big difference in how successful you are and the amount of work that you will need to put into it. There are a few different things that you will need to consider when it comes to picking out the bonsai that you would like to work with, including:

    • Check out the bonsai all over. You will want to make sure that you are picking a tree that is in really good health or it can quickly die out. You should see if the tree seems pretty stable inside of the pot and if there happens to be any pests that are visible on the pot. The tree should also have some well shaped leaves that are green. You will want to stay away from any trees that seem to have some problems, such as wilting and browned leaves. Since you are a beginner, a healthy and strong tree is going to be critical to helping you succeed.
