Queer Quilting: Patchwork Designs for Gay Men Since patchwork quilts are usually displayed in bedrooms where couples engage in sex, why are there so few quilt designs for folks who want a bit of sexual energy in these intimate spaces? Johnny Townsend, author of Quilting Beyond the Rainbow and Gay Sleeping Arrangements , is back with another volume of original quilt designs for men who love men. Praise for Johnny Townsend In Zombies for Jesus , Townsend isnt writing satire, but deeply emotional and revealing portraits of people who are, with a few exceptions, quite lovable. Kel Munger, Sacramento News and Review In Sex among the Saints, Townsend writes with a deadpan wit and a supple, realistic prose thats full of psychological empathy.he takes his protagonists moral struggles seriously and invests them with real emotional resonance. Kirkus Reviews Let the Faggots Burn: The UpStairs Lounge Fire is a gripping account of all the horrors that transpired that night, as well as a respectful remembrance of the victims. Terry Firma, Patheos Johnny Townsends Partying with St. Roch [in the anthology Latter-Gay Saints ] tells a beautiful, haunting tale.
Kent Brintnall, Out in Print: Queer Book Reviews Selling the City of Enoch is sharply intelligentpleasingly complexThe stories are full ofdoubters, but theres no vindictiveness in these pages; the characters continuously poke holes in Mormonisms more extravagant absurdities, but they take very little pleasure in doing so.Many of Townsends storieshave a provocative edge to them, but this [book] displays a great deal of insight as wella playful, biting and surprisingly warm collection. Kirkus Reviews Gayrabian Nights is an allegorical tour de forcea hard-core emotional punch. Gay. Guy. Each square on the grid represents a piece of fabric. You decide how large you want the finished quilt and then do a bit of simple math to determine how large each individual patch should be. Calculate a quarter inch seam allowance onto each patch and start cutting. Its usually best to work with 100% cotton (or occasionally leather or suede if the design warrants).
Depending on the design, you can choose a variety of prints or solids, mixing and matching as you see fit. If youre not already familiar with contrast and value, watch a couple of videos before choosing your fabrics. Itll save you a lot of heartache later. Almost every patch here is a square or triangle. One common triangle takes two squares to complete. The three most basic templates are below.
Other specialty squares follow the designs they appear in. You may have to shrink or enlarge them slightly to accommodate the exact sizes you need, depending on the dimensions youve chosen for the finished quilt. A quick note here about titleswhen I use terms like Daddy or Grandfather for some of the designs, Im referring to adult men who are attracted to older men, not literal family members. Youll have lots of great ideas of your own as you work with either physical or online graph paper, but youll discover they wont all translate into workable patchwork designs. Thats OK. Just polish a different idea instead.
Ill offer several designs with minor variations so you can see how easy it is to adapt these to suit your personal taste. And dont worry if you make mistakes and your quilt tops dont come out perfect. Were just having fun. Lets relax and enjoy ourselves as we piece together quilts for our beds, our walls, and gifts for our friends! Three Basic Patches Leather Pride Flag Im including some photos here Ive shown in previous books, but this time, I also want to comment on them. This Leather Pride Flag design uses just two of the basics, a square and a 45-degree angle. Thats it.
You can make more complicated quilts as you get more practice, but theres plenty to achieve with true basics. This photo, too, shows how you can get specialized fabrics for certain quilts. While I prefer 100% cotton for all of mine, here Ive narrowed it down further to denim. You could also have a quilt made only of leather, or suede, or corduroy, or silk, or whatever. Rainbow Flag What Id like to point out here is the pink triangle. The angles in this design are more complicated than the 45-degree angle in the previous one, which was made by slicing diagonally through a single square.
This angle requires two squares for each segment, and I still alternate prints with solids. Simple designs can produce successful quilts. Theyre a great way to start out and theyre worthwhile in and of themselves. Blow Job Im including this early design because so many in Queer Quilting depict graphic sex acts. Id probably design this a little differently today, but you can see how much can be accomplished with just squares and 45-degree angles. You can also see here how important it is to choose prints with similar values for different portions of the quilt.
Starting Off with a Bang If you wanted a traditional quilting book, you wouldnt be reading this. So lets start off with some sex. No sense pretending thats not why were here. If Mom and Dad are coming to visit, you can put your sexually graphic quilt in the linen closet for a few days. Or you can ask for quilting tips on how to make your next one better.
