The autumnal equinox is the time of paganthanksgiving, and we celebrate it in a similar manner. We givethanks for the wealth of the harvest, for the summer past, and askboons for the winter ahead. Feasting, sharing and group activitiesare commonplace not only in our pagan community, but also inphysical communities all over North America. Fall suppers havebegun, people from all over come together to create huge, traditional meals for their neighbors and others to enjoy.

In many households, the work of preservingthe garden produce has just begun. Freezing, canning, and otherpreparations for winter keep everyone busy and on their toes. Craftfairs, workshops and farmers markets pop up, all celebrating theseason and the harvest finished. For pagans worldwide, it is time for PaganPride Day. Started by Cecylyna Dewr in 1998, it has grownmonumentally in the past years. Each event is organized locally, and can range from small public rituals to massive gatherings withworkshops, vendors and entertainers.

Every event has two commonthreads, though: to raise money and donations of food for localfood banks, and to raise awareness of the pagan religions andlifestyles. This is one we like tocelebrate outside, often with readings in thankfulness fromthe Pagan Book of Prayer by Ceisir Serith. For the purpose of this writing, Mother isrelevant to High Priestess, Father to High Priest, and Child 1 andChild 2 to group members. If your family is a single parent orsame-sex parents home, please combine the duties or drop those thatdo not fit. A small altar should be set with the familys ritualtools, though lighting the candles if you are outdoors may provedifficult.

As always, the choice is up to the parents. The chaliceshould be filled with fresh apple cider or juice, and an offeringof cookies (see recipes) on the plate to serve for cake andale. Mabon Meal Mabon is the perfect Sabbat for a fun, out ofdoors barbeque or wiener roast. The weather is starting to getnippy in the evenings, there are the smells of freshly harvestedfields, gardens and orchards in the air, and the beauty of Naturescolors everywhere. The best time to be outside! We here on the prairies in Canada find thatthis is usually our last chance for an outdoor Sabbat untilBeltaine, and sometimes even until Litha.

Of course we take fulladvantage, because the snow is not too far behind!
