INTRODUCTION: WHY 4 HOURS? AND WHY 4 MONTHS?
T he genesis for this book came from two events. The first occured in the late 1980s when my father, Ernie Kuehls, picked up running. He was a 50-something math professor who hadnt run at all in his life. In fact, he hadnt participated in sports for more than 25 years. He was a bit overweight andhe soon found outhe had no endurance at all.
Yet one day he headed out the door for a run.
My dad didnt make half a mile.
But he kept at it. After a while he ran a mile without stopping. Then 2 miles, then 4 miles.
One event loomed in the back of his mind.
That event was the marathon.
As a goal for his first marathon Ernie chose a specific time goal. The goal was to break 4 hours . And he chose a specific time frame in which to train for that marathon:
4 months , the optimal time to train for a marathonbecause any longer and youre likely to be burned out on training. Any less and youre not prepared.
And after 4 months of training my dad completed his first marathon in under 4 hours (3 hours and 58 minutes, to be exact).
Flash forward a few years. Im standing at the finish chute of the 1993 New York City Marathon on assignment for Runners World magazine. Im writing an article about the blanket crew who supply some 25,000 finishers with shiny, heat-retaining blankets. As I stand at the finish chute and watch the runners come in, first a trickle at just over 2 hours, then more toward 3 hours and, finally, at 4 hours theyre crossing like a St. Patricks Day parade, I come to a realization: most of the marathon runners out there are just like my dad . Theyre out there to run a marathon and 4 hours is the goal .
THE 4 STEPS TO A 4-HOUR MARATHON
- Train smartly.
- Eat effectively.
- Rest wisely.
- Pick a fast marathon.
Why? Because 4 hours is a doable goal . You dont need tons of speed (which is the hardest part of running to come by), just a goodly amount of endurance (something everyone can build into their system, just like my dad). In addition, there is something quasi-mystical about the 4-hour marathon . A foot populi version of what surrounded the 4-minute mile for half a dozen fleet-footed milers back in the 1950s.
So I decided to write a book. This book.
I decided I would tell 4-hour marathoners exactly what to wear, what to eat, how to train and how to run the marathon. Every sentence would be geared toward one goal: Getting the reader to the finish line of a marathon in 4 hours .
And to help me with the book, what better person than my dad, who set out to doand didjust what youre about to learnand dofrom reading this book.
In 4 months , you too can run a 4-hour marathon .
Read on.
