About the Author
Dan Gookin has been writing about technology for over 25 years. He combines his love of writing with his gizmo fascination to create books that are informative, entertaining, and not boring. Having written over 140 titles with 12 million copies in print translated into over 30 languages, Dan can attest that his method of crafting computer tomes seems to work.
Perhaps his most famous title is the original DOS For Dummies, published in 1991. It became the worlds fastest-selling computer book, at one time moving more copies per week than the New York Times number-one bestseller (though, as a reference, it could not be listed on the Times Best Sellers list). That book spawned the entire line of For Dummies books, which remains a publishing phenomenon to this day.
Dans most popular titles include PCs For Dummies, Word For Dummies, Laptops For Dummies, and Android Phones For Dummies. He also maintains the vast and helpful website www.wambooli.com .
Dan holds a degree in Communications/Visual Arts from the University of California, San Diego. He lives in the Pacific Northwest, where he enjoys spending time with his sons playing video games indoors while they enjoy the gentle woods of Idaho.

Chapter 1
The Out-of-the-Box Experience
In This Chapter
Liberating the phone from its box
Giving the battery a charge
Recognizing things on the phone
Obtaining optional accessories
Taking the phone with you
Everything has a first time. Baby takes her first step. You take your first trip in an airplane. A congressman keeps a promise. Yet when it comes to technology, taking that first step can often be an odd or awkward experience.
With electronics, the first step starts with taking the thing out of the box, which can often be an ordeal. Thats why I wrote this chapter. My purpose is help you do some initial orientation, take care of first-order duties, and become more comfortable with what could be a brand-new experience: using the Fire phone.
Hello, Phone!
Studies show that high-tech equipment works faster when its removed from the box. Your Fire phone came in a delightful box, filled with goodies. Many of these items are highly useful, so dont get them lost in your mad frenzy to rip out the phone and start using it.
Inside the Fire phone box, youll find the following goodies:
