Those who work with and train horses on a regular basis are likely constantly searching for new ways to make inroads and find answers when faced with tough training or behavior problems. Grand Prix dressage rider and performer Yvonne Barteau has trained her share of horses over the yearsfrom off-track racing Thoroughbreds, to Arabians, to Friesians, to Warmbloodsand she asserts that everything that needs to be known about effectively training a horse is already known...by any horse.
Each horse, says Barteau, will know and respect the person who figures out how to train him, if that person is fair. The best trainers are not only horse whisperers, they are listeners. And readers. They listen to what the horse has to say. They can read horse body language and behavior patterns. They are calm and they stay calm under pressure. How did they learn that? By studying horses. Over time the horses told them how to be a horse trainer and they listened.
Barteau believes that every dressage rider can learn to listen and read, and so experience greater success and partnership with his or her horse. In this book Barteau has used her knowledge and decades of experience and success in and out of the dressage ring to help put to paper what 10 different dressage horses would say to you about horse training if they could. Through the dressage horses mouth, from his point of view, readers learn: how simple things really are and how complicated we make them; the value of routine, consequence, and peace; the importance of leadership, fairness, and trust; the need for your sense of responsibility to match your ambition; plus, what kinds of rewards really work and what frightens, annoys, or causes horses to disregard us altogether.
If you listen properly, horses will tell you how to train them. This book is a published declaration of their needs as our athletic partners, fellow competitors, and friends.

CONTENTS
FOREWORD

BY HILDA GURNEY

As both an international dressage competitor and judge, I am intimately aware of the importance of effective communication between horses and riders. In The Dressage Horse Manifesto, Yvonne Barteau explains the communication that occurs during dressage training from the horses point of view. This unique perspective helps the reader to understand various equine personality characteristics and how to work most effectively with their specific needs, as well as how to mean what you say when it comes to the aids.

Yvonne has trained many horses and students through all of the levels of dressage. Tapping this experience and using the voices of the horses shes trained and ridden over the years, Yvonne carefully explains the effects of riders seat, weight, hand, and leg aids. The detail is significant here, spanning the first experiences of young or green horses, all the way through the Grand Prix level. The valuable insights and tips she shares should help riders improve their understanding of how horses think when reacting to the aids, in both training and competition.

Because it is written from the horses perspective, this book is a different and valuable new guide to training dressage from start to finish. All the levelsand required movements and demands of each levelare clearly explained in great detail. Plentiful photos make clear the objectives of each training exercise. By developing an understanding of how horses mentally and physically react to their riders progression of training, we will be more likely to achieve the goal of harmony, which is so important in dressage. This is why The Dressage Horse Manifesto is a must-read for all dressage enthusiasts.

ACKNOWLEDGMENTS

I would like to extend my gratitude and a sincere thanks to the following people:

Rebecca, Martha, and Caroline from Trafalgar Square Books for seeing this project through with me. Your thoughtful questions and attention to detail showed your dedication to your readers.

My wonderful husband Kim, for putting up with me all these years. He is the best part of KYB dressage and a heck of a good cook.

My four independent, intelligent, and entirely unique children. Jamie, Jess, Kassie, and Hudi (sorryKayla). Each of you make me both proud and humble.

My long-time sponsor and dear friend Ginna Frantz of Grand Prix Equestrian, for too many reasons to list. Allowing me so much time with GP Raymeister is worth its own category of gratitude.

My friend of many years, Erika Walsh, for her unending cheer and deep well of valuable advice.

INTRODUCTION

Everything that needs to be understood about effectively training a horse is already known by any horse who has been trained and most who are waiting to be trained. Each horse will know and respect the person who figures out how to train him, if that person is fair.

The best trainers in the world are not only horse whisperers, they are listeners. And readers. They can read horse body language and behavior patterns. They listen to what the horse has to say. They are calm, and they stay calm under pressure. How did they acquire this skill? By studying horses. Lots of them. They learned by paying attention. Over time, the horses told them how to be horse trainers, and they listened. You can listen, too.

What would all the horses say to you about horse training if they could?

  • They would talk about how simple they really are and how complicated we make things.
  • They would talk about routine, consequence, and peace.
  • They would talk about leadership and fairness.
  • They would talk about basics.
  • They would talk about trust.
  • They would hope your sense of responsibility matched your ambition.
OUR BEST TEACHERS

It has been said that no one can teach riding as well as a horse. This book gives you a chance to test this theory. You will hear in as direct a manner as possible the perspectives of 10 dressage horses, including details about how they might want to be trained and ridden.

This book addresses everything from understanding the basic equine temperament types and how they relate to daily training and riding, to how a horse wants to be ridden during certain movements and through a complete dressage test. Well discuss timing and dosage of aids; how to remove the white noise from your riding; and the best ways to ride specific dressage movements while allowing your horse to be at peace while he is performing. In addition, common problems that we all have likely facedor will facein our experience with horses are discussed and solved from the horses point of view.

HOW THIS WORKS

In the pages ahead, you will be introduced to a variety of horses who all have a voice in their training programs. They will tell you how to train horses with characteristics, and straightness and balance issues, similar to theirs. They will explain how they prefer their problems and issues be handled. Everything from basic discipline to finished movements will be addressed. A number of different narrators, all of the equine variety, will instruct you as to what really works and what annoys; what frightens or causes them to disregard you altogether. You will hear direct from the horses mouth how to hold the reins, how to sit in the saddle, and how best to use your leg and seat aids. You will learn what kinds of rewards work best for certain types of horses and how to get a horse on your side, both at home and in the show ring.
