About the Authors
Don MacAdam grew up playing ice hockey on a river in Prince Edward Island on the east coast of Canada. Players there had to be quick to avoid losing pucks down eel holes chipped in the ice by the local fishermen. Since then, Don has coached hockey for over thirty years. He has worked with kids who stepped into skates for the first time and has coached players at most levels on the way up to and including Olympians and NHL players in the Detroit Red Wings, Edmonton Oilers, Ottawa Senators, and Columbus Blue Jackets organizations.
In addition to coaching, Don has been an educator in the hockey field. He helped develop Canadian Amateur Hockey Association (now Hockey Canada) materials for their coaching certification programs and conducted coaching seminars at all levels for the association. Don has also co-authored five books on hockey.
Gail Reynolds started out with an affinity for the softer side of water, as a competitive swimmer and eventual swimming coach. Swimming awakened a general love of sport that ultimately saw her coach a variety of sports and athletes, including wheelchair track and field.
At the same time, Gail became an exercise physiologist and started developing training programs for athletes in all types of sports. Hockey came into focus when Don, who was coaching the University of New Brunswick Red Devils hockey team (where Gail was a professor), asked whether shed develop a training program for his team. That evolved into the writing of five hockey books together. Gail also worked with the Coaching Association of Canada to develop materials for their coaching certification program and conducted their coaching workshops for all levels of coaches for all sports. title
Dedication
We dedicate this book to the coaches who started us off in pursuit of sports and who left us with only good things to say about them:
From Don,
To Reg MacAdam, who drove us to games, coached us, cheered us on, and did everything for us in such a positive way.
To A.J. MacAdam, an inspiring coach and sports administrator, who opened my eyes to the fact that you could actually make a living as a coach.
From Gail,
To Buck Billings, whose instruction methods and patience always made you feel like you were a winner.
To Al Clark, who gave as much as he demanded and made you better than you thought you might be.
Authors Acknowledgments
Thank you, Derek Reynolds, for being our go-to guy throughout this project. When Dereks young son wanted to play hockey and the league said, We need coaches, Derek stood up. Hed never coached hockey before. In fact, hed hardly played; he was a competitive rower. Derek picked many brains as he started out, including ours, and then he gave a lot of kids a great hockey experience. Thanks for sharing your lessons.
Thank you, Frank Hubley and Bruce Elliot, for the brainstorming sessions at the outset of this book. Your minor hockey experiences and coaching wisdom helped us focus on some important themes for this book, such as Franks persuasive insistence that minor hockey has to be for the kids, not the parents, and Bruces reminder that minor hockey coaches will coach a lot more old timers than NHLers.
Thank you, Robert Hickey, our editor at John Wiley and Sons Canada, and Mike Kelly, our developmental and copy editor, for your patience and confidence in guiding a couple of coach-authors through a new approach to book writing. Youre great team players. A special thanks goes out to Zo Wykes for her Dummies style prowess.
