CONTENTS
FOREWORD
Travel has always been my happy place. When I reflect on the most memorable times of my life, thus far, travel is by far the common denominator. I recall my first family trips as a child, sleeping huddled on a pile of blankets in the back of the Dodge to awaken in the early hours at a mountain-side caf that served stacks of country pancakes. I remember being a young, carefree adventurer staying in tiny inns across Europe or hopping around the Caribbean discovering new islandsall on a nonexistent budget. And, when my two sons arrived, taking my children with me on discoveries of everything unique and exciting and witnessing their amazement at every turn. My urge to unearth that new adventure or find is just as fervent today, fueled by my traveling friends advice and discoveries.
One major discovery stands out. With all my travels through the years, there is nowhere I have been on earth that is more precious in my memories than right here, where I grew up, in Southern Californiaa destination filled with beauty, wonder, diversity and so many sweet surprises. Although I have enjoyed sharing these discoveries in eight previous editions of SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA OFF THE BEATEN PATH, as well as in countless articles and travel columns, I have concluded that many of the most inspiring and unique discoveries within my writing actually came from my readers who live and visit here, as well as from my many knowledgeable friends in travel.
And, so, I thank each and every one of you who have taken the time to share your secrets for all to discover in SECRET SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA. I dedicate this book to my very special secret-sharing friends. May you never keep a secret that is just too wonderful to spill!
Fondly,
Kathy

The Making of a State
When James Marshall discovered gold at Sutters Mill in 1848, the story of what makes California unique really began. California became the promised land for those seeking opportunity. No journey was too tough to stop the great migration of dreamers who made their way to find riches in the foothills of the Sierra. Even when the riches were depleted, the migration continued, first by train, with completion of the transcontinental railroad in 1869, and later by automobile, along historic Route 66.
Marshalls discovery epitomized the American dream: Anyone could find riches, whether these came from shiny minerals hidden in the earth or from hard work, determination and ingenuity. Movie studios, airplane factories, vineyards, and orange groves filled the environs of Southern California. As one historian wrote, California was founded on gold fever, but it has since thrived on land fever, oil fever, and Hollywood fever. That sums it upand the fever that afflicts present-day adventurers to California continues.
Fun California Facts
California is the nations third largest state. It has 1,264 miles of coastline bordering the Pacific Ocean. The state is 560 miles wide and contains 158,706 total square miles.
The Salton Sea in the Imperial Valley is the largest lake in the state. The Salton Sea is 30 miles long and 14 miles wide at its widest point.
The highest point in the state is Mount Whitney in the southern Sierra at 14,496 feet high; it is also the tallest peak in all the forty-eight contiguous states. At 282 feet below sea level is Badwater, the lowest point in the entire Western Hemisphere. The two locations are just 60 miles apart.
How did California get its name? There are several theories or lore. In one story, Hernando Corts uttered the Latin words callida fornax, meaning hot furnace, when he first landed in Baja California. Another story relates that Corts named the land after a sea-formed arch, using the Spanish words cala (cove) and y (and) and the Latin word fornix (arch). The most popular explanation is from Garci Rodrguez Ordonez de Montalvos sixteenth-century Spanish romance Las Sergas de Esplandian. The novel refers to Califerne, a mythical island. It is thought that the early settlers, with their Spanish heritage, may have named the state after this island.
California has several nicknames. Everyone has heard California referred to as the Golden State, but how many of these other nicknames have you heard? Americas Number One Market, Cornucopia of the World, El Dorado, Eureka State, Gateway to the Pacific, Grape State, Land of Discoveries, Land of Gold, Land of Living Color, Land of Promise, Land of Sunshine and Flowers, Sunshine Empire and Wine Land of America.
