Introduction
Photo courtesy -Houndstooth Studio I got the ideafor making my own dog treats when I was poking around on theinternet and found some cute bone shaped cookie cutters. I decidedto bake some cookies for my dog Ollie and then started searchingfor recipes. The problem was that I couldnt find many productsthat looked healthy and natural. Most of the ingredients listsincluded wheat and corn (see allergies information below) andoften with added sugar.
So I decided to make my own! I spent 6months researching ingredients which would make my biscuits safefor almost any dog to eat. That meant: Grain-Free Dairy-Free Gluten-Free No addedsugar Corn-Free Nopreservatives Soy-Free No artificialcolours All of therecipes in this book are vegetarian. Firstly because although Irecognise that dogs are omnivores, beef and chicken allergies arequite common in dogs and I wanted to present a range of treats thatwas safe for most dogs. These treats are not intended to replacemore than 10% of a well-balanced diet. Although I myself am avegetarian, I am a strong advocate of raw diets for dogs and Olliedoes get his fair share of raw meaty bones. If you can sourcefree-range organic meat, then your dog will feel the benefits andyou will be making a difference to the welfare of farm animals.
Of course Ialso wanted my treats to be mouth-watering and irresistiblydelicious for our dogs! The end result is a healthy and tastyfreshly baked organic treat which will have them begging formore. I hope yourdogs enjoy my recipes as much as Ollie does. I am delighted to beable to share them with you.
