The red-brick spires of 1000-year-old Basler Mnster () dominate the skyline of the city on the Rhine River. At once historic and traditional, Basel is also a center for contemporary culture and world-class dining.

Zurichs Altstadt (Old Town; ) is a pristinely preserved historic quarter, offering hidden squares with little bistros, narrow cobblestone streets, gurgling fountains, medieval houses, galleries, boutiques, and antique shops.
Cafe culture thrives in Zurich, a city long associated with artists, writers and intellectuals, who cooked up their sometimes radical ideas in the city's sidewalk cafes.
Window-shopping is free along Zurichs Bahnhofstrasse, one of the worlds most expensive retail avenues. Beautifully presented chocolates at Confiserie Teuscher may tempt you to make a purchase, though.
No filter needed: Zurichs Altstadt glows in the light of a summer sunset, with buildings reflected in the calm waters of the Limmat River, which divides the old town into West, or Left Bank and the East, or Right Bank.

You can climb the 250 steps up the Gothic towers of Basler Mnster to be rewarded with sweeping vistas of Basel, the Rhine, and the surrounding countryside. Dating to 1019, the cathedral was rebuilt in Romanesque and Gothic style following a 1356 earthquake.
One of Basels two main squares, Marktplatz is the site of the Rathaus (), or historic town hall. From Tuesday to Saturday, a vibrant farmers market on the square is a great place to find street food and picnic supplies for a DIY lunch.
The reputation of the Swiss as master cheesemakers goes back at least to Roman times. Today some 550,000 milk cows roam Alpine pastures, supplying dairies with the raw material to make more than 100 kinds of cheese.
