AKNOWLEDGEMENTS W riting a golf book as an amateur takes a lot of chutzpah - photo 2
AKNOWLEDGEMENTS

W riting a golf book as an amateur takes a lot of chutzpah (some would say shameless impudence) and a demand for more work than ever anticipatedespecially concerning the photographs and artwork. So I would like to thank some key people for their help in the completion of this look back on Ben Hogan.

Helen Hunt, my chief organizer, who was completely forgotten in the last book.

Sean Connery, with his Hogan spirit and timely encouragement.

Dr. Des Dwyer, who not only kept my injury-ridden body intact, but gave his time and knowledge of golf to early rough-draft editing.

Charles Hillman, with his unwavering enthusiasm for analyzing the details of this elusive game.

Dr. Marty Mclouglin, whose inquiring mind and myriad questions gave momentum to the difficult task of explaining the function of a golf swings many moving parts.

My thanks to several golf professionals for their valuable advice: CJ Wilson, Jack Westover, Joe Jeroski, Wayne Hong, Drew Scollon, as well as PGA tour players Alvie Thompson and Dick Zokol.

Special thanks to Jeff Buder who, as Point Greys head professional, provided me with several Hogan insights, and modeled the short game wherein he specializesas when demonstrating his skills in the Canadian PGA Club Professional Championship in Florida in November 2009, finishing in a tie for first place.

Other models included: Yuya Kihara, Point Greys Junior Champion; Professional Wayne Hong; Rose-Mary Basham, a Hogan-swing look-alike; and keen golfers James Boyle, Marty Mcloughlin, Des Dwyer, Paul Brown, Morgan Good, Ryan Cook, and Tasha Samuels visiting from the faraway Queen Charlotte Islands, now named Haida GwaiiIslands of the Haida.

Photographers include Peter Burnet, Shelley Winfield, Stefan Winfield, and Mike Lilly, who has steered three sons into very good golf. And thanks to Tim Mah for demonstrating the similar demands of fitness and balance for dance and golf.

There were three artists whose paintings helped illustrate this book, necessary because new Hogan photographs are difficult to find, and most tend to be shots of the swing-finish rather than photos which show specific key points of the masters technique. Bill McLuckie painted the Hogan chapter images. Ken West provided some lively paintings and diagrams. And many thanks to Kyle Cormier for introducing me to Kevin Coughlin, the artist from Winnipeg, who allowed us to use his Texas Golf Greats image as a last glimpse of Ben Hogan in repose. His other Texas Greats paintings were of Hogans formidable rival and caddy friend, Byron Nelson, then Ben Crenshaw, who taught me a lot about putting, and Tom Kite who introduced me to the value of properly fitted club shafts.

My appreciation to Colette Miller in the administration office at Point Grey who was always very helpful and considerate, as was General Manager Brad Pinnell.

Thanks also to Mitch Woolrich for his business advice. To Abigail Gehring for her coordination of 231 images with captions; not an easy task. And thanks to Mark Weinstein, the Senior Editor at Skyhorse Publishing who was so helpful and patient concerning the thousands of problems involved with this golf bookhis tenth edit.

CHAPTER 1 FROM RUDE BEGINNINGS B en Hogan didnt stand a chance for a - photo 4
CHAPTER 1
FROM RUDE BEGINNINGS

B en Hogan didnt stand a chance for a successful life as a kid from the plateau lands of central Texas. He was born on August 13, 1912, in Stephenville Hospital across the Brazos River from Fort Worth, just ten miles north from his familys simple cottage in a cattle town named Dublin. His mother, Clara, married a blacksmith named Chester who had health problems on top of the bad luck to be caught in the middle of a horse-dominated economy changing inexorably into an automobile economy. Depressed and impoverished, Chester could not cope with all the changes which were beyond his control, and so chose a cold and brittle St. Valentines Day to shoot himself in front of his quiet and polite nine-year-old son Bennie. The noise of the thirty-eight caliber pistol aimed awkwardly at the heart in the confines of a tiny cottage blew away for young Ben any hope of a life which could be supported by normal amounts of trust and confidence.

It should be noted that, in contrast, Tiger Woodss father, Earl Woods, was a decorated Green Beret with two tours in Vietnam. So, as a lieutenant colonel, he knew the value of discipline and commitment. His goal was to transfer to his son the essential characteristics of a good person as well as those of a champion by self-examination and discovery of ones talent, and the unwavering determination to polish it. Tigers daily routine began with making his bed every morning then finishing his homework before any golf could be contemplated.
