DOUBLE-KNIT ABBREVIATIONS AND THEIR EXPLANATIONS

DK = Double knit

DKSt = Double-knit stitch. Every double-knit stitch consists of 1 st each of both colors; the color that will appear on the front is knit, the color that will appear on the back is purled. When working the knit stitch, both strands are held in back of the work; when working the purl stitch, both strands are held in front of the work.

DKSt(A) = Working double knit with color A as front color. Color A is knit (both strands in back of the work); color B is purled (both strands in front of the work).

DKSt(B) = Working double knit with color B as front color. Color B is knit (both strands in back of the work); color A is purled (both strands in front of the work).

inc-le(color) = Increase at the left edge. Knit the next stitch in the color listed in parentheses (both strands in back of the work), but leave it on the left needle. Then purl the same stitch through the back loop (twisted) with the other color (both strands in front the of work), but still leave it on the left needle; leave the strand in color B hanging in front of the work, and then knit the same stitch once again in edge color. The following selvedge stitches are then worked in color A only.

inc-re(color) = Increase at the right edge. Knit the next stitch in the edge color, but leave it on the left needle. Now knit the same stitch through the back loop in the color listed in parentheses (both strands in back of the work), but still leave it on the left needle. Then purl the same stitch through the back loop (twisted) with the other color (both strands in front of the work), and now let it slip off the left needle.

inc-ctr-r(color) = Increase in the center to the right of the center stitch. Using the color listed in parentheses, make an increase from the bar between the sts in the front (near) layer. Lift the bar from the back, and knit it the regular way (both strands in back of the work). Then, using the other color, work an increase from the bar between the sts in the back (far) layer. For this, lift the strand from the back, and purl it (both strands in front of the work). See also right-leaning increase on page 8.

inc-ctr-l(color) = Increase in the center to the left of the center stitch. Using the color listed in parentheses, make an increase from the bar between the sts in the front (near) layer. Lift the bar from the front, and knit it through the back loop (twisted) (both strands in back of the work). Then, using the other color, work an increase from the bar between the sts in the back (far) layer. For this, lift the bar from the front, and purl it through the back loop (twisted) (both strands in front of the work). See also left-leaning increase on page 8.
